More immigrants housed in Artesia deported

More Central American immigrants left New Mexico on Friday morning.
Just after 5 a.m., a charter Immigration and Customs Enforcement plane landed in Roswell. Shortly after, three busloads of immigrants arrived.
Women with their children got on a plane to head back to the country they fled from. A U.S. official was also seen holding a baby.
The women without children were shackled. ICE officials tell KOB it is standard protocol to shackle all single adults outside the detention center.
This is the second round of immigrants to be deported from New Mexico. Nearly 40 Central Americans flew back to Honduras Monday.
ICE officials tell KOB this is just the beginning. More immigrants will be returned in the coming days and weeks--A journey they'll likely never forget.
There's no word yet on when the next plane will be depart.

59 illegal immigrants deported from US arrive in Honduras

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – A flight carrying 59 women and children arrived Friday in Honduras from New Mexico, the second group of migrants from the Central American country to be deported from the United States this week.
Nun Valdette Willeman welcomed the 33 children and 26 women at San Pedro Sula airport's Center for Returned Migrants.
"All the children came accompanied by their mother, none of them traveled alone," Willeman said.
She said there is a playground for the children and a place for their parents to clean up and get ready before continuing to their hometowns by bus. Each child received a small backpack with crayons, and their mothers about $24 for travel expenses.
Several of the women said they had mixed emotions about failing to stay in the United States and that they now worry about paying back the thousands of dollars they borrowed to travel north.
"Part of my heart stayed in the U.S. because I missed a chance to get ahead in life," said Isabel Rodriguez, who was deported along with her 2-year-old boy and 8-year-old daughter.
"The most important thing is that I'm with my children," she added.
Another woman who wouldn't give her name said she still owes about $7,200 she borrowed to pay the smuggler.
On Monday, about 40 Honduran migrants detained in New Mexico were deported to their home country.
More than 50,000 young people have showed up unaccompanied since last fall, many fleeing oppressive violence in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, but also drawn by rumors that once in the U.S. they would be allowed to stay.

ICE denies late night New Mexico deportation claim
8:22 AM MDT Jul 24, 2014

ARTESIA, N.M. —Federal immigration officials are denying allegations that immigrants held at a New Mexico detention center were being deported in the middle of the night.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said Wednesday the women and children housed at the Artesia facility weren't being pulled from sleep to board removal flights to Central America.
Immigration advocates who were allowed to visit the center said Tuesday that women there complained that children aren't getting proper medical care and people are being deported at odd hours before they can see a lawyer.
Federal authorities say at least three planes have deported immigrants from the center.
ICE officials say more of the 600 or so women and children at the center are scheduled to return to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador soon.
