    Arrests made in Monday shooting

Two men have been arrested in connection with the shooting attack on two 19-year-old women at a stoplight Monday night in Rockingham, Police Chief Robert Voorhees said.

One of the women, Mandy Robinson of Billy Covington Road, Rockingham, was treated at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. The other, Lauren Emily Pace of Fairwood Drive, Rockingham, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she is in stable condition.

Both suspects are believed to be Mexican nationals and are being held in the Richmond County Jail under $1 million bond each.

Rodrigo Renteria, 27, of Monroe, is believed to be the man who allegedly shot the women with a .9-mm handgun. He was arrested on felony charges of two counts of attempted murder, two Class C felonies of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

Julio Cesar Hernandez, 16, of Monroe is believe to be the driver of the vehicle. He was arrested on the same charges.

"We have recovered their vehicle and the weapon used," Voorhees said.

"The investigation is continuing, and there could be more arrests," he said. "There may have been others in the suspects' vehicle."

The Rockingham Police Department put out a bulletin on the identification of the suspects' car and a possible license plate number. Voorhees said the car was spotted late Monday night by officers of the Monroe Police Department. He said the State Bureau of Investigation was also involved in the search for the suspects.

Rockingham investigators went to Monroe where all the agencies worked to arrest Hernandez first and later Renteria.

Voorhees said at 8:50 p.m. Monday, the two women were traveling north on Long Drive, Rockingham, and stopped at the stoplight at Rockingham Road.

He said an unknown blue vehicle pulled up along the left side of the victims' vehicle and stopped.

An unknown suspect got out of the blue vehicle and attempted to open the door of the women's vehicle, which was locked, Voorhees said.

The unknown suspect then pulled out a gun, he said, and shot into the vehicle with bullets striking both women. The women drove to the parking lot of Winn-Dixie grocery store on Rockingham Road for help.

Lauren's father, Freddy Pace, said his daughter is in stable condition and is expected to be fine.

"She will be here (Carolinas Medical Center) four to five days. It was a lot less severe than they initially thought," he said.

She suffered a stomach injury and minor colon injury, he said.

    Man held in double slaying

    Man held in double slaying
    Deaths thought to be drug-related

    By SARAH OVASKA, Staff Writer

RALEIGH -- A Mexican citizen was arrested early Friday and charged with two counts of murder in connection with a Georgia couple found shot to death in a car earlier this week.
The man, and two others he lived with, are also charged with trafficking several kilograms of cocaine and methamphetamine.

Arsenio Calderon-Sanchez, 19, of 4833 Tommans Trail in northeast Raleigh was arrested at 1:15 a.m. at an undisclosed location in Robeson County and charged with two counts of murder. Calderon-Sanchez also uses the name Antonio Bautista Pineda, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office, the investigating agency.

Calderon-Sanchez was being held without bail at the Wake County jail.

Few details have emerged from the Sheriff's Office about the double homicide, except that it is thought to be drug-related, according to previous statements made by Sheriff Donnie Harrison.

Leobardo Espinoza Bedolla, 38, and Araceli Torres Morales, 35, of Roswell, Ga., were found shot to death Monday. The two were found inside Espinoza Bedolla's 1999 Ford Taurus on a dirt turn-off leading to a cell phone tower off Louisburg Road (U.S. 401) outside Rolesville.

Torres Morales' sister said Thursday that she did not know why her sister was in North Carolina.

The two, both originally from Mexico, were killed with bullets from a 9 mm gun, said Phyllis Stephens, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office.

An amount of money described as substantial was found outside the car at the crime scene, Stephens said. The amount has not been released.

In addition, a spent bullet was recovered from the car's glove compartment, and a box of household plastic wrap was found in the car, according to a search warrant filed in the case.

No indication has been given as to the level of involvement, if any, police think Espinoza Bedolla and Torres Morales might have had with the drug trade.

Calderon-Sanchez and two other men who listed their homes at the same Raleigh address were charged with a number of drug trafficking charges Friday.

All three men also face charges of using the Tommans Trail home as a place to store drugs.

Calderon-Sanchez is facing charges of trafficking more than a kilogram of methamphetamine and 10 kilograms of cocaine, Stephens said.

A second man, Guillermo Pineda-Betancourt, 38, is accused of trafficking 56 grams of cocaine and a kilogram of methamphetamine, Stephens said.

Antonio Bautista Pineda, 19, is accused of trafficking four kilograms of cocaine and 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, Stephens said.

Calderon-Sanchez used Bautista Pineda's name as an alias, but the charged man is a separate person, Stephens said.
