The chief of the border patrol in the El Paso sector, Anthony Good, said that these migrants, mostly from Venezuela, have surrendered to the agents ''after entering illegally'' in the United States.

Good recalled that they can be removed from U.S. territory under Title 42, a health policy that allowed migrants to be denied the opportunity for asylum in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For his part, the head of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Raul Ortiz, has remarked that ''the borders are not open and people should not make the dangerous journey''.

''People should not trust smugglers or others who claim that the borders are open,'' he said, before adding that ''migrants who enter illegally are subject to removal and repatriation.''
