SAN ANTONIO — SAN ANTONIO - 51,500, the number of migrants Congressman Henry Cuellar said has been dropped off at the San Antonio bus stop just from December of until now.
Cuellar said 90 percent of those are crossing illegally and now asking for asylum from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
"My thing is we turn Mexicans and Canadians right away, why not treat everyone the same," Cuellar said.
Unlike deporting to Mexico or Canada, the process for Central Americans is far more time-consuming and costly.
Especially when they arrive as a family unit.
"So if somebody gets released here in San Antonio," Cuellar said. "They probably won't get a hearing for the next four to five years."
It's a loophole of sorts for migrants who have figured out a way to stay.
"So there are other countries now understanding, there are people from other countries saying 'hey this is what we need to do, bring a child and if you come with a child, a family unit, then you are treated very differently," Cuellar said.
Cuellar wants to change that, pushing for more immigration judges and a new process allowing more migrants from all countries to be deported faster.
Another part of the solution, helping the Central American countries, work on their problems to reduce the number of people seeking asylum.
Cuellar said it's a far better investment than a border wall.
