More than 55,000 migrants opt to leave Germany voluntarily rather than be deported

2016 has seen a significant rise in the number of migrants opting to leave Germany voluntarily rather than be deported by local authorities. Based on January-November data from the Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) daily reported (via Deutsche Welle) that most of the migrants who returned home were from the Western Balkans. Additionally, the country has also deported more than 25,000 migrants this year and according to a Finance Ministry spokesman, the government plans to increase funding to €150m in 2017 towards efforts to encourage people to leave Germany.
