Immigration debate rages in PDX

PORTLAND, Ore. – The immigration debate has gotten so large, the controversy has spilled over into states nowhere near the borders.

Wednesday morning, the Portland City Council unanimously passed a resolution condemning Arizona’s immigration law that requires police to question people if there is reason to believe they are in the United States illegally. Opponents of the law say it unfairly targets Hispanics.

“That’s great. The law is out of control and outrageous,” said Portland resident Mike Rapaway.

Proponents say the police are merely enforcing a national law.

“What part of ‘illegal’ don’t you understand?” said Portland resident Homes Tupper.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams said the City Council’s resolution allows a city-approved local attorney help Arizona cities trying to overturn the law. Adams said the lawyer would work pro-bono at no cost to the tax payer.

Adams said the resolution allows Portland to lobby for tougher anti-racial profiling laws statewide next year.
