Move to allow illegal immigrants to get Colorado licenses misses ballot

An initiative that would have allowed illegal immigrants to apply for a state driver's license will not be on the ballot this year.
Campaign officials said they believe they only gathered about 40,000 signatures.
The group "Driver's License For All" needed to gather more than 86,000 signatures from citizens registered to vote in order to make it on the ballot.
"We found people to be very open to the initiative with about three-quarters of the people who stopped to listen to us agreeing to sign," said campaign spokeswoman, Jennifer Piper in an email Tuesday. "As of Friday we were still receiving calls form new people who wanted to volunteer on the campaign."
Piper said a low number of volunteers, and insufficient communications hindered their chances this year.
The group is now exploring legislative options for the spring, and is also preparing for another petition drive for the 2014 election, Piper said.
"We have learned so much from this first go around and expect to be able to launch quickly next time and get all of the signatures," she said.
