Honduran Mom Living in Utah Church Loses Appeal for Asylum

Vicky Chavez sought sanctuary at a Utah church from Immigration and Customs Enforcement while her asylum case was being considered. She moved to the U.S. in 2014, citing domestic abuse, violence and economic and social unrest. (Steve Griffin/The Salt Lake Tribune via AP)

Honduran mother of two who has spent the past six months living in a Utah church to escape deportation has lost her appeal to have her asylum case reconsidered.

Vicky Chavez, who fled her native country in 2014 to escape an abusive ex-boyfriend, entered the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City with her two daughters in February when her bid for asylum was denied.

She appealed the decision, but Unidad Inmigrante, which helps immigrants, announced Monday night that the bid to have the case reopened has been denied.

"People believe that she is in sanctuary, that everything’s fine," said Amy Dominguez of Unidad Inmigrante, KUER-FM reports. "She is safe, however things are not fine and this is not normal."

The family will continue to fight deportation, immigration advocate Easton Smith told The Salt Lake Tribune.

"Since Vicky and her family have arrived to the United States, they have been doing everything correctly, but the system continues to fail them again and again," Smith said.

"After waiting 6 months for her asylum case to be reopened, the Board of Immigration Appeals denied that request and now, Vicky will be appealing to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to try to reverse the decision made by the BIA."

Chavez plans to continue to live in the church.

Section 1324 of title 8 of the US code makes it a federal felony to harbor illegals. Lock up these church officials.

That's right. This isn't the Obama's administration anymore. It's time for President Trump to change the rules and policies of the Obama administration that prevented ICE from apprehending illegals from churches, hospitals, schools, etc.

    From the article...
"After waiting 6 months for her asylum case to be reopened, the Board of Immigration Appeals denied that request and now, Vicky will be appealing to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to try to reverse the decision made by the BIA."

How many appeals does our crazy laws give these invaders?

Will ICE be able to deport since she has latched onto this?

They have got to be STOPPED before entering---once they get that foot in the door, there are too many loopholes they use to stay forever and forever.

She can appeal the BIA ruling through Federal District Court. She can also file a motion to stay removal to prevent deportation while the appeal is pending. However, there is no guarantee the stay will be granted.
