    Mysterious polio-like illness kills 6-year-old

    November 3, 2016

On Wednesday, Oct. 12, 6-year-old Jonathan Daniel Ramirez Porter woke up with a fever. His mother, Marijo Ceguzman, decided to keep him home from kindergarten in Ferndale, Wash., a small town less than an hour south of the Canadian border.

Instead of getting better, Daniel complained of a severe headache the next day. By Saturday, Oct. 15, he was stumbling and drooling, unable to keep food in his mouth or to speak clearly.

Ceguzman and Daniel's father, Jose Ramirez, brought him to Seattle Children's Hospital, where his condition at first baffled physicians there, his mother said.

"They had no clue what it was," said Ceguzman, 33. "At first they thought it was a bacteria, so they were giving him antibiotics. That didn't work, and they figured out it was a virus. They were giving him pain medicine, blood pressure medicine and steroids to help with swelling in his brain."

With local news reports describing other children in Washington state as having a polio-like condition called acute flaccid myelitis, or AFM, Ceguzman said, "I asked the doctor if it's possible he could have this, because a lot of the symptoms sounded the same."

Daniel was given a tentative diagnosis of AFM, as his condition worsened.

"They said they could try to put him in an induced coma to let his body fight the virus," Ceguzman said. "All Daniel wanted to do when he got this was to rest, so we chose the coma."

Despite the efforts of some 30 doctors treating him, Daniel died Oct. 30.

Daniel is one of nine children tentatively diagnosed in recent weeks with AFM across Washington state, and the first person known to have died of the mysterious disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began tracking the disease in 2014, when 120 cases were confirmed between August and December. The condition mimics polio but is not caused by the polio virus. It affects primarily children, causing sudden loss of control of the muscles in limbs and other parts of the body. It's not clear what causes the disease, and no medical treatment has proved effective.

This year, reports of new cases in the United States doubled in September compared to August, the CDC reported Monday, with the year-to-date total of 89 cases in 33 states on track to match or exceed the 120 cases confirmed in all of 2014.

Locally clustered cases of AFM have been reported in Philadelphia and, for the first time, in Europe. The first cluster of European cases of the polio-like condition was described in British news reports last month, involving four cases being treated at Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. Two cases of AFM have also been reported in Canada.
In Philadelphia, nine children were treated for AFM in August and September, said Sarah Hopkins, a pediatric neurologist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Although the average age of children treated during the 2014 outbreak was 7, the average age of the nine children seen this year by Hopkins has been closer to 5.
Most of the children treated in 2014 have made a modest recovery, she added, although none is back to their original strength.

The CDC defines AFM as the sudden onset of flaccid paralysis, in which muscles controlling the limbs, face or other body parts become droopy (not stiff), and in which an MRI exam shows damage to the gray matter of the spinal cord. The condition is often preceded by a fever or severe headache. Although some cases involve only a mild paralysis of a single limb, others affect the muscles that control breathing and the patients require mechanical ventilation to survive.

As the number of cases rises this year, researchers at the CDC say they are more mystified than ever by what is causing the condition.

"It's a complete puzzle," said Steve Oberste, chief of the CDC's Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch. "What's going on now is really odd. I hope we can assure the public that people are working on, not just the CDC but many others. There are so many things about this outbreak that are puzzling, and the pieces aren't fitting together yet. Eventually we'll know more, but right now it's pretty difficult."

During the 2014 outbreak, a growing line of evidence suggested that the condition may be a rare but serious complication of infection with enterovirus D68. That year, over 1,000 children across the country were treated for serious respiratory illnesses linked to D68, which is in the same viral family as the polio virus.

The problem with that hypothesis was that D68 was never found in the spinal fluid of infected children. Even so, many doctors remain convinced by studies showing a strong geographic and chronological association between D68 and AFM, and by the fact that D68 is related to polio.

This year, however, the case for D68 has weakened, because no similar outbreak of respiratory illnesses associated with D68 or any other enterovirus has been seen in the United States, leaving researchers desperately searching for answers. (Both children affected by AFM in Canada, however, tested positive for exposure to D68.)

"What we saw in 2014 was a temporal relationship between D68 and AFM," said Manisha Patel, who leads 10 researchers working full time at the CDC investigating the AFM outbreak. "This year we don't have that. So we are not ruling anything out. We're looking at not just viral causes but environmental causes. Yes, enteroviruses are biologically plausible, but there are also other things that could cause this."

Some of the apparent rise in cases, Patel said, may be due to increased surveillance by the CDC and rising awareness among physicians and the public. And despite the higher numbers, she emphasized, the condition remains extremely rare.

In the two years and three months since the CDC began tracking the condition, she said, "Less than one in a million people have developed AFM. It's a very serious illness that CDC is taking very, very seriously. But what remains consistent is that AFM is still rare."

For all the CDC's efforts, some doctors think it still is not doing enough and should make it mandatory for doctors to report all new cases of AFM and other cases of sudden paralysis to health authorities.

"A mandatory reporting for non-traumatic paralytic disease should be urgently considered nationwide," said Benjamin M. Greenberg, a neurologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, who has treated some of the children afflicted by the disease. Mandatory reporting, he said, would pick up paralysis due not only to AFM but to Zika, West Nile, Guillain Barre and a variety of other paralyzing conditions.

"We need to be proactive, not reactive," he said.

After losing her child, Ceguzman said, "We're still fighting to figure out what happened to Daniel and to warn people about this. He wouldn't want this to happen to any other kid."

As of Thursday morning, a GoFundMe page set up to help pay for Daniel's medical care had raised $14,317 from 295 people.

Enterovirus D68 linked to illegal immigration is behind fatal polio-like illness kill

Enterovirus D68 linked to illegal immigration is behind fatal polio-like illness killing American children

(NaturalNews) A strange virus that began to spread rapidly after multiple waves of illegal immigrant children were shipped into the U.S. from Latin America last year has been shown in a new study to be directly related to the "polio-like illness" that's reportedly infected at least 112 children in 34 states, and killed nearly a dozen others.

Known as enterovirus D68, or EV-D68, the mystery virus picked up speed dramatically last fall, with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting that the number of new cases reported in 2014 was significantly higher than in any previous recorded year. And now, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) have found the genetic signature of this enterovirus in patients diagnosed with a related illness known as acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).

After looking at every other possible factor that could have triggered AFM in the patients studied, the team verified that EV-D68 was, in fact, the cause of every case of AFM. A relatively new strain of EV-D68 known as B1, it turns out, which emerged about four years ago, was found to be the trigger of AFM, manifesting symptoms similar to the polio virus and another closely related nerve-damaging virus known as EV-D70.

For the first time, researchers also discovered EV-D68 B1 in a blood sample taken from a child with acute paralytic illness. And many others with AFM were also determined to have EV-D68 B1 in their respiratory secretions, though no EV-D68 B1 was found in any of the patients' cerebrospinal fluid. This isn't surprising, say researchers, because polio
virus is generally extremely difficult to detect in cerebrospinal fluid.

"This suggests that it's not only the virus, but also patients' individual biology that determines what disease they may present with," stated Dr. Charles Chiu, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of laboratory medicine and director of the UCSF Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center about the variances in where EV-D68 B1 has been discovered in patients diagnosed with AFM.

"Given that none of the children have fully recovered [from EV-D68], we urgently need to continue investigating this new strain of EV-D68 and its potential to cause acute flaccid myelitis."

EV-D68 detected in sick children from Latin America, confirms study

Because EV-D68 wasn't found in any of the children's cerebrospinal fluid, researchers suspect that their AFM symptoms may be a result of their bodies' abnormal immune responses to the virus rather than the virus itself directly causing nerve damage. Either this or the timing of when the samples were collected, more than a week after the children began showing symptoms, made the virus appear elusive.

"The lack of detectable virus in CSF could also mean that the neurological symptoms are coming from an aberrant immune response to recent EV-D68 infection and not because the virus is directly invading neurons," added Chiu in his paper, which was published in the British journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

From mid-August 2014 to January 15, 2015, the CDC and various state public health laboratories confirmed more than 1,100 cases of EV-D68 in 49 states and the District of Columbia -- and almost all of these cases were in children. The CDC estimates that millions of others likely contracted mild versions of EV-D68 as well, but says these cases went unreported since most of those infected didn't get tested for the virus or receive medical treatment.

"The CDC hasn't suggested reasons for the current uptick or its origin," wrote investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson about the mysterious, polio-like disease in a recent article referencing a study published in the Virology Journal. This study confirmed that EV-D68 was present in many of the 3,375 young, ill people from eight Latin American countries that were shipped to secret locations throughout the U.S. last year.

"Without that answer, some question whether the disease is being spread by the presence of tens of thousands of illegal immigrant children from Central America admitted to the U.S. in the past year."

CDC Warning: Immigrant Children Could Be Spreading This New Mystery Virus In Public S

CDC Warning: Immigrant Children Could Be Spreading This New Mystery Virus In Public Schools

    "This isn’t a mystery; it’s well-known medical science..."

by Robert Richardson September 29, 2014 at 12:10pm

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning yesterday about a mysterious polio-like virus that’s causing acute neurological illness and paralysis in children. The virus seems to be related to the nationwide epidemic of EV-D68 that we reported on during the first weeks of the outbreak.

The CDC is investigating nine cases of muscle weakness or paralysis in Colorado children to see if enterovirus 68 (EV-D6 might be the virus responsible for the neurological symptoms.

On Friday, The CDC issued a Health Advisory to doctors about the polio-like cases in Colorado, and said EV-D68 was detected in four of the eight sick children who were tested for the virus.

The CDC says the mysterious illness is characterized by “focal limb weakness and abnormalities of the spinal cord gray matter on MRI.” The cases, which are just now being made public, occurred between August 9 – September 17 among children aged 1-18 years old (with a median age of 10 years-old).

The nine children who have been confirmed to have this neurological illness all had fever and respiratory illness about two weeks before developing varying degrees of limb weakness. Health officials don’t think it’s polio because eight of the nine children are up to date on their polio vaccinations.

The CDC, in their health advisory, confirmed that they are looking into the possibility that the nationwide outbreak of EV-D68 is causing the polio-like illness. They are asking doctors around the country to be on the lookout for similar cases and to report any similar neurological illnesses to the CDC.

As we reported in our first article on the EV-D68 outbreak, the CDC and our Federal government are completely ignoring the fact this this virus seems to have been spread by illegal immigrants who’ve been dumped throughout the country – thanks in large part to the Obama administration.

Although it’s received very little mainstream media coverage, the current outbreak of EV-D68 is common to El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, three countries where a bulk of the illegal immigrant children come from. These unaccompanied illegal immigrant children have been allowed into the nation’s school systems without medical screenings and without required vaccinations.

The CDC may be pretending that they have no idea where this outbreak came from, but for months now similar neurological illness outbreaks have been occurring in border towns throughout the U.S.. In fact, back in February of 2014, an outbreak of a polio-like illness caused as many as 25 children in California to come down with paralyzed limbs and little hope of recovery. According to the BBC, at least five of these cases were directly linked to enterovirus-68, proving the CDC has known about this outbreak for quite some time now.

In July of 2014, the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that communicable diseases were being spread throughout detention centers set up to house incoming illegal immigrant children. These children were then being dumped in unsuspecting communities around the country.

Many UAC and family units require treatment for communicable diseases, including respiratory illnesses, tuberculosis, chicken pox, and scabies,” the IG report said. “UAC and family unit illnesses and unfamiliarity with bathroom facilities resulted in unsanitary conditions and exposure to human waste in some holding facilities.”

Unless this government starts to control the crisis at the border, this is only the beginning. When you allow entire populations of people into a country without medical screenings, the results are actually quite predictable.
