WASHINGTON -- For two years we have watched the reality TV sitcom of the presidential self-education campaign. As the dust settles on past campaigns and new concepts appear, other issues of vital importance rear their heads -- such as the appearance of an invading army, numbering nearly a million in our cities.

This army does not take prisoners; it recruits all the time and outnumbers our defenders by at least a thousand to one.

This is neither science fiction nor a movie script, but a very real army of criminals, of which at least 800,000 are organized into 50,000 units or regiments and which we comfortably write off as gangs.

These figures are less than three months old, provided by John Pistole, deputy director of the FBI. In Los Angeles alone there were 40,000 gang members, organized into 400 gangs, he said. Pitted against this massive force were a mere 330 Los Angeles police in the Gang Enforcement Division who could call on another handful of just 630 FBI agents nationally active against gangs.

A thin blue line indeed.

The FBI's deputy director briefly discussed Mara Salvatrucha, the MS-13 gang that originated in El Salvador 20 years ago and later erupted in Los Angeles. He said that the savage MS-13 had at least 10,000 members, now active in 42 states, and were recruiting actively in middle and high schools among Hispanics. Given the official mandate in many towns -- which claim with certitude that they do not have a gang problem for fear of scaring investors away or unnerving a wealthy tax base -- these numbers are almost certainly a fraction of the truth.

Listening to an old policeman from Ohio about a MS-13 event last month was worse than any horror movie. In a small riverside community one Saturday morning, 40 cars drove into an isolated National Parks Service lot. There were 300 MS-13 members, called together by Internet messages for a "council."

Males outnumbered females 3-to-1. But they all helped unload the beer and food. There was a cookout, new members were initiated by being stripped and beaten, and then the talking began and continued until the late afternoon.

The local police department -- seven good, middle-aged guys -- when learning what was in town, went home and pulled the blinds down. Surprised and outnumbered, what could they do?

On the way out of town, one MS-13 car stopped by the police station and a packet was thrown out. The cops found $20 bills, adding up to $5,000, and a message: "Thanx for having us. We will be back."

Five weeks later the same thing took place. Of course, there was again no police report. No police officer saw anything wrong -- just a number of cars parking and all the off-duty officers were out of town at a high school soccer game. But this is 2008 and a cop's salary of $21,000 a year does not go far.

Thus, we can add corruption to the MS-13 list of crimes that include murders, rapes, drug dealing, people smuggling and the spreading of terror. Their enemies are dealt with by cutting off hands, arms, feet and heads. Machetes are the weapon of choice.

Gang numbers are increasing as the ages of members get lower by the month. MS-13 is just one or many immigrant gangs -- there are Vietnamese, Cambodian, Ethiopian, Kenyan and Nigerian gangs. Most of these immigrant gangs learn from our own "home boys," the black Crips and Bloods, together with the Irish-American and our Southern boys. Their money comes from drug sales, crime and Internet fraud -- that's the girls' specialty. It used to be prostitution but now they are the computer queens exercising power through the Internet.

Every politician agrees that a study must be done. But we the people want it to be stopped. Throwing money at this problem, like the feds have done with terrorism, will not work. We want support for the police in crushing gang operations, even in areas where there is just a whisper of them operating. Not comfortably as now but with roadblocks, mandatory identification cards and immediate deportations for the aliens. With lock-up for others, to be guarded by carefully selected military units (they, too, have been infiltrated by gangs), in controlled labor camps with really hard and useful work being done before release dates are even considered. And, finally, reconsidered age limits for arrests of gang members.

The ACLU -- All Criminals Love Us -- will scream "unconstitutional" and "human rights are being abridged." Too bad! There is no constitutional protection for illegal alien gangsters that can be invoked.

There might be a tradition of new immigrant gangs in this country but it need not be a celebrated one. As it is sometimes remembered, "by their actions we will know them!"

The sad part is that while there are 800,000 gang members nationwide, there are only 900,000 total law enforcement officers nationwide, including federal, state, and local. Is this government going to wait until we're outnumbered 2-1?

This is 30 years of not giving a damn.....same with 22 years of not giving a damn about illegal immigration, it is what you sow by indifference to enforcing the laws, many of these gang members are from other countries, and have been allowed to escalate by not deporting.

Yep 30 years of not giving a damn about illegal immigration because the elites are ALL consumed in the greed of Big Business! They figure they can build walls tall enough to keep the violence out and to hell with the rest of us

I read somewhere just recently that the FBI states that the majority of new gang members are in this country illegally.
