Durham firm pleads guilty to harboring illegal aliens

The owners of a Durham carpentry firm face prison time plus fines and forfeitures of up to $750,000 after pleading guilty to harboring and shielding illegal aliens in connection with their business operations.
Jose Lopez and his brother, Juan Antonio Lopez, owners of J&A Framers Carpentry Inc., entered the plea in U.S. District Court in New Bern, according to United States Attorney George E.B. Holding.
Prosecutors contended that, for the past six years, the Lopez brothers filled the work force needs of their eight-person framing crews by recruiting and housing illegal workers from their hometown in Mexico.
In some cases, the government also alleged, the brothers loaned funds to their illegal workers to pick up the costs of the smuggling, or “coyote,â€
