Illegal immigrant faces deportation after traffic stop

A traffic stop Monday by members of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office’s Interstate Criminal Enforcement Unit resulted in numerous charges and discovery that the vehicle’s driver is an illegal immigrant.

According to the sheriff’s office, Luis Alberto Zelaya-Orellana, 33, of Charlotte, was stopped for speeding and a child-restraint violation on Interstate 85. During the course of the stop, deputies learned that Zelaya-Orellana was wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for failure to appear and had an outstanding warrant for deportation.

Zelaya-Orellana was charged with failure to appear and outstanding warrant of deportation, then placed in the Davidson County Detention Center under an immigration detainer issued by the Department of Homeland Security/Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He was also charged with driving without an operator’s license and failure to use child restraints.
