GARFIELD — A 26-year-old Paterson man has been arrested on charges related to alleged "inappropriate sexual activity" with a 13-year-old girl, authorities said Friday.

Pedro Liranzogomez, a scrap metal worker, was arrested Thursday at a Port Authority facility after the girl's mother reported the allegations to authorities, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said in a news release.

The arrest was made by detectives from the Prosecutor's Office and police from Garfield and the Port Authority, Molinelli said. He did not provide information about why the arrest took place at a Port Authority facility. A spokesman for the agency said on Friday that he did not have information about the arrest.

Molinelli said the girl, an "acquaintance" of the defendant's, had told her mother about the alleged sexual activity.

The accused was charged with one count each of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child, Molinelli said. He was being held Friday in the Bergen County Jail on $150,000 bail, according to jail records. The records also show a detainer has been placed on Liranzogomez out of Union Township.

Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli announced the arrest of PEDRO LIRANZOGOMEZ (DOB: 12/15/198 of 234 Park Avenue, Paterson, New Jersey on charges of Criminal Sexual Contact and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit under the direction of Chief Carmen MARTINO and the Garfield Police Department under the direction of Chief Kevin AMOS.

On May 14, 2015, members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Garfield Police Department arrested Pedro LIRANZOGOMEZ after learning that he engaged in inappropriate sexual activity on one (1) occasion with a thirteen (13) year old female acquaintance. The victim told her mother what had occurred and she contacted the Garfield Police Department who then notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit. Arrangements were made for the victim to be interviewed by a detective from the Special Victims Unit at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in Paramus, New Jersey. During that interview, the victim provided specific details regarding what had taken place with Mr. LIRANZOGOMEZ. The ensuing investigation resulted in the arrest of Mr. LIRANZOGOMEZ.

Pedro LIRANZOGOMEZ was charged with one (1) count each of Criminal Sexual Contact and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Bail for Mr. LIRANZOGOMEZ was set by the Honorable Susan J. Steele, P.J.S.C. at $150,000.00 with no ten percent option and no contact with the victim as a condition of bail. Mr. LIRANZOGOMEZ was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.

Prosecutor Molinelli states that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and would also like to thank the Garfield Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Dominican native from Paterson was being held on $150,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail on charges of having “inappropriate sexual activity” once with a 13-year-old Garfield girl.

Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli didn’t specify what 26-year-old scrap metal collector Pedro P. Liranzogomez is accused of doing.

The charges — criminal sexual contact and child endangerment — under state law would indicate nothing physical.
“The victim told her mother what had occurred and she contacted the Garfield Police Department, who then notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit,” he said.

In a subsequent interview with an SVU detective at his office, the girl provided specific details regarding what had taken place with [Liranzogomez],” Molinelli said.

Port Authority police took him into custody, the prosecutor said.

An arraignment was set for this coming Tuesday.
