Peters Testimony on Mexican Trucks Was Frightening

Hoffa Lauds Pryor, Dorgan for Standing Up for Safety and the Constitution
Washington, D.C. – Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa said that Americans should be frightened by the Bush administration’s low regard for safety as it opens the border to dangerous trucks from Mexico.

For example, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) chief John Hill told reporters that a Mexican trucking company with a horrendous safety record didn’t have a history of serious violations before it was accepted into the pilot program. Hill spoke after his boss, Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, testified before the Senate Commerce Committee on why she chose to ignore Congress and keep the program going.
According to the FMCSA’s own data, Trinity Industries de Mexico had 75 out-of-service orders and should have had another 476, according to its own standards, in the year preceding September 21, 2007. According to federal law, a truck or vehicle is placed out of service when an “imminent hazardâ€

I watched this hearing in it's entirety and this Mary Peters is a frightening!

This woman seems to believe that the United States is "obligated" under NAFTA to move forward with this cross-border Mexican Trucking Program, despite the substantial evidence this program is extremely dangerous and filled with fradulent data provided by the Mexican Trucking Companies. The very essence of those standards in which Mexico issues commercial drivers licenses to it's truckers is not on par to with those standards which have been implemented here in the United States. That condition alone would appear to disqualify Mexican Truckers from entering the United States beyond the commercial zone which is 25 miles from the US Mexican Border.

Apparently, fulfilling a perceived obligation with Mexico is more important to Mary Peters than the safety and welfare of American Citizens who have to share the roads with these dangerous truckers from Mexico.

[/b]Here is a response from one of my Senators on the Mary Peters issue:

    Dear Mr. and Mrs. _______,

Thank you for taking the time to contact my office with your concerns about the Secretary of Transportation, Mary Peters. Your input is important to me, and I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts.

Since coming to the Senate, I have promised Tennesseans that I will work diligently to secure our borders and help fix our nation's broken immigration system. After reviewing the Department of Transportation's own Inspector General Report, I did not believe we could ensure that trucks coming into our country from Mexico are fully safe. Therefore, in 2007 I voted to stop the funding of the Mexico-US cross border pilot program as a part of the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Act. That language ultimately became law in the 2008 Omnibus Appropriations Act.

While I agree that Secretary Peters did not act consistently with the votes cast by both houses of the United States Congress, I believe that the ongoing litigation regarding her decision should be completed before further Congressional action is warranted. As this process moves forward, I will continue to keep your thoughts in mind.

Thank you again for your letter. I hope you will continue to share your thoughts with me over the course of my term in the United States Senate.

    Sincerely,

    Bob Corker
    United States Senator
