LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The Department of Homeland of Security recently issued task orders for security work to begin along the New Mexico and Mexico border.

The DHS and Army Corps of Engineers will construct more than one mile of border fence near Columbus, and another three miles in Santa Teresa.

A spokeswoman from Sen. Pete Domenici's office said the work is separate from the border fence and vehicle barriers the Army National Guard has constructed in the same place.

"I agree with the work they're doing to protect the United States," said Columbus resident Robert Flores.

"I think they're doing the right thing," Flores said.

The border fence is expected to be completed by February 2008.
