Danbury woman charged in diamond theft

SOUTH SALEM , N.Y. -- A 37-year-old cleaning woman from Danbury has been arrested after she replaced a customer's $8,000 diamond with a fake one, according to state police.

Monica Ferriera Lopes, of Park Avenue , is scheduled to appear Monday in Lewisboro Town Court on a charge of third-degree grand larceny.

Lopes, a Brazilian nation who is in the country illegally, was employed as a house cleaner by Grasso Cleaning Service of Danbury when she took the diamond engagement ring from a South Salem residence Dec. 30 and swapped out the genuine stone for a fake one, state police said.

She has been in custody at the Westchester County Jail on $10,000 bond since her arrest last week, police said, and is also being held on an detainer from the federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
