Seven Picked Up In Immigration Raid

    By Luke Anderson

4/25/2008 - LAKEWOOD — Seven people were picked up Thursday in an illegal immigration raid by federal and local authorities.

The seven are all believed to be employees of La Herradura restaurant in Lakewood.

Federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Officials conducted the raid at three locations Thursday morning.

‘‘Several were sleeping in the restaurant, and others were arrested at residences in Lakewood and Dunkirk,’’ said Mike Gilhooly, ICE spokesman.

Of the seven, three were released on their own recognizance, a couple with a child and a man with a health issue. The other four were detained.

All seven will face removal hearings before an immigration court.

The arrests come the week after the apprehension in an unrelated investigation of 45 undocumented aliens who were smuggled into the country to work in seven restaurants owned by Jorge Delarco of Depew. Delarco and 10 of his managers were charged with conspiring to harbor illegal aliens.

The restaurants involved in that investigation include Azteca Mexican Food Cantina in Dunkirk and Don Lorenzo Mexican Restaurant in Allegany, as well as restaurants in the Buffalo area, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.

No criminal charges have been filed against La Herradura owners or management, but the investigation is ongoing.

ICE officials were assisted in the investigation by Lakewood-Busti, Dunkirk and state police.
