Avoca, NY -
Eleven suspected illegal immigrants were taken into custody late Tuesday night after a traffic stop in Avoca.

According to the Steuben County Sheriff’s office, a deputy initiated a human trafficking investigation after stopping a vehicle around 11 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 86 in Avoca. He found 11 non-English speaking Hispanics in the vehicle.

The subjects, who police said originate from several South American countries, could not provide adequate legal documentation for being the U.S., and they were taken to the Steuben County Jail while police investigated.

The investigation led to three of the subjects being detained by U.S. Border Patrol for suspected human trafficking. The other eight subjects were detained pending deportation hearings.

None of the immigrants’ names have been released because Border Patrol is continuing its investigation.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by New York State Police.
