An illegals tip

Preparations by the federal government to handle a legalization program for illegal aliens are premature but also a valuable early warning about misguided White House intentions.

Alejandro Mayorkas, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which approves visas, told The New York Times that his agency is preparing to process untold millions of applications because the president intends to make legalization part of his immigration overhaul.

Those preparations are premature because the White House has pushed back that overhaul until next year. But Mr. Mayorkas has given opponents of what rightly should be called "amnesty" and supporters of the rule of law a welcome signal to ratchet up their efforts against any legalization proposal.

It's disappointing that the Obama administration's direction runs counter to that suggested by steps it has taken to improve immigration enforcement.

Apparently, this president, supposedly so politically savvy, has forgotten the painful lesson Congress taught President George W. Bush by defeating his amnesty proposal in 2007.

Amnesty for illegals is a bad idea that deserves rejection and defeat, no matter who proposes it.

This time, though, the amnesty cat's out of the policy bag sooner than the White House probably would have liked -- and that makes the only acceptable outcome, one that shows fealty to the meaning of "illegal," more likely.
