BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A national "Fast for Families" bus tour will be stopping by Bakersfield to raise awareness of immigration reform.
Kern County immigration reform advocates, including United Farm Workers president Arturo S. Rodriguez, will welcome the bus at Yokuts Park, located off Truxturn Ave. and highway 99 this Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Following its arrival, the bus will continue with a procession at 10:45 a.m. to House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy's office. A press conference will then be held at 11 a.m.
The bus tour will meet at 6 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, to hold a community meeting to discuss immigration reform and community involvement.
The bus tour is part of the "Fast for Families Across America" national campaign. The campaign plans to visit more than 75 congressional districts — seven of those in California — throughout the country.
Rudy Lopez and Dae Joong Yoon, who fasted for 22 days relying only on water, will be among those traveling in the bus to Bakersfield.
The bus tour took of from Los Angeles Monday, and is expected to reach Washington, D.C., on April 9.

National bus tour promoting immigration reform stops over in SF

A new national bus tour pushing immigration reform through fasting passengers stops in San Francisco today for a number of events inviting the public to rally around the issue.
The Fast for Families Across America Tour builds on its first fasting event that ended at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in December and will end with two buses converging back at the Capitol on April 9. The bus traveling from Los Angeles and arriving in San Francisco this morning includes Vincent Pan, executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, a civil-rights advocacy organization.
The main idea behind the tour is to garner support from Republican members of Congress on immigration reform, but outreach is also important in left-leaning cities like San Francisco, said Grace Lee, policy director for Chinese for Affirmative Action.
“I think we take for granted that it’s a liberal city, that we’re known as an immigration-friendly city,” she said. “Some of the smaller districts where the buses are stopping could use bus riders and support.”
