NBC Dumps Trump; Bows to Mexican Pressure

NBC Universal – under pressured from Hispanic groups – is cutting ties with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The Miss USA pageant was scheduled for July 12, but will no longer air on NBC after the network decided to sever its business relations with Trump – who owns the pageant – following his statements on the southern border and illegal immigrants during his announcement speech this month.

“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values,” the company said, according to CNN. “Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump.”

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best… They’re sending people who have lots of problems,” Trump said during his formal announcement speech in New York City. “They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists, and some, I assume, are good people.”

“These comments caused a firestorm and widespread condemnations, leading Univision to end a five-year contract to air Miss USA and Miss Universe after only five months,” CNN reported.

NBC originally said Trump’s statements during his speech, “do not represent those of NBC, and we do not agree with his positions on a number of issues, including his recent comments on immigration.”

However, now – like Univsion – NBC will not broadcast the Miss USA pageant.

Donald Trump calls NBC 'weak and foolish' after they sever ties with GOP hopeful

    Published June 29, 2015FoxNews.com

Donald Trump labeled NBC as "weak and foolish" after they ended their business relationship with the GOP hopeful over his comments about immigrants from Mexico, and said he'd see the Peacock network in court.

“If NBC is so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/Miss USA will be determined in court," Trump said in a statement to FOXNews.com. "Furthermore, they will stand behind lying Brian Williams, but won’t stand behind people that tell it like it is, as unpleasant as that may be.”

NBC cut ties with Trump after he, in his announcement to run for president, described immigrants from Mexico as "bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists, and some, I assume, are good people."

“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values," the network said in a statement. "Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump."

The network added that it was done with Trump's pageants as well.

"To that end, the annual Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageants, which are part of a joint venture between NBC and Trump, will no longer air on NBC."

NBC was co-owner with Trump of the pageants and is in business with him as host and producer of the popular show "The Celebrity Apprentice."

The network stated that their reality show with him was kaput, too.

"In addition, as Mr. Trump has already indicated, he will not be participating in 'The Celebrity Apprentice' on NBC. 'Celebrity Apprentice' is licensed from Mark Burnett's United Artists Media Group and that relationship will continue."

Before issuing his statement on the matter, Trump first addressed NBC's decision while speaking at an event at City Club of Chicago on Monday afternoon.

"Whatever they want to do is O.K. with me," he said. "I’ve had a lot of great relationships with NBC, I think as far as ending the relationship, I have to do that, because my view on immigration is much different than the people at NBC."

A petition posted on Change.org asking NBC to fire Trump had collected more than 215,000 signatures since being posted on June 26.

Last week, Univision, the nation's largest Spanish-language network, said it wouldn't air the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, and will cut all future business ties with him.

At the time, NBC responded only by saying the company doesn't "agree with his positions on a number of issues including his recent comments on immigration." A sister network of NBC is Telemundo, another major Spanish-language TV outlet, which aired the Miss Universe pageants before Univision won the contract.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

NBC fired Donald Trump for calling Mexican immigrants "rapists"

Donald Trump appears in the most recent season finale of The Celebrity Apprentice. NBC

    1. NBC announced it will no longer air properties associated with Donald Trump, including the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, as well as the long-running reality show The Celebrity Apprentice.
    2. The decision comes in the wake of Trump making what NBC deemed "derogatory statements" about Mexican immigrants.
    3. Trump's properties had already been dropped by Univision, and that company's employees had been told not to patronize Trump-owned businesses while traveling.
    4. "When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best," Trump said on June 16 when announcing his candidacy for president. "They’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems. They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime. They’re rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they’re telling us what we’re getting."
    5. "Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump. At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values," NBC said in a statement.
    6. Trump released his own statement on his Facebook page, which you can read below.

The decision saves NBC headaches in other areas as well

The network aired a new season of The Celebrity Apprentice in winter 2015, but it hadn't aired the program since 2013 before that. The show had cooled substantially from its early megahit days (when it was just The Apprentice), but it served as relatively cheap fill-in programming for the network, something that could be tossed on the air for a few weeks to draw a consistent, if low, ratings number.
NBC had picked up The Celebrity Apprentice for an eighth season back in February, but because of Trump's candidacy, he was not going to appear on camera in that eighth season. Why? Something usually called the "equal time" law.

Any subsequent seasons of Celebrity Apprentice would have aired with Trump as a bona fide presidential candidate, which would have bumped up against the rule, which guarantees that radio and TV stations that use the US broadcast bandwidth must provide equal time to all candidates in a particular political race.

It sure seemed like that would apply to The Celebrity Apprentice, but at the same time, a reality show is substantially different from most campaign opportunities, so it was hard to say just how the equal-time rule would be applied. Would all presidential candidates, no matter how minor, be given two hours weekly for six to eight weeks on the NBC network? Would they all be given reality shows?

NBC's solution was to relegate Trump to a role as producer only, which almost certainly would have worked — even if Trump's boardroom decisions remain the show's most easily marketable element.

But trying to figure out a way forward with a Trump-less Apprentice only would have been necessary if the show were a bigger hit. In its current state, it's much easier for the network to simply cut ties with Trump.
Trump also gets a benefit from this deal

While the loss of a broadcast network outlet for the beauty pageants likely hurts more than The Celebrity Apprentice (which had turned into a headache for both its network and major star), Trump now gets to portray himself as a Hollywood pariah to the Republican conservative base.

Wrote Alyssa Rosenberg at the Washington Post in advance of NBC's decision:

If Trump can suggest that NBC, like Univision, is getting rid of him because of the positions he’s taking, there are all sorts of new political options available to him. He can argue that his comments about Latino immigrants are a form of brave truth-telling about both Mexican culture and American trade policy that are too hot for networks — especially one like Univision, which aims at a primarily Latino audience — to handle. Trump can also position himself as a conservative victim of Hollywood discrimination, someone who has been inside the machine and emerged with truths about the entertainment industry’s liberal bias that the world needs to hear.
There's a written statement from Trump you all should read but for some reason it didn't copy with the rest of the article, so just click on the link and read it from there. If someone knows how to post that document, please help me by doing so. Thanks!

He's tough, it's just hard to believe he's really going to try to do some stupid amnesty or "merit system" for people to stay. That statement just does NOT fit with everything else he says, thinks and has said and thought for 30 years. I'm riding on his bumper, not on the wagon yet, but right there ready to jump on.

I mean who else in the history of the United States has a presidential candidate actually put his business interests at risk to tell us the truth and help us fight for a solution about such a huge problem?

I know of no one. He would be the first to my knowledge.

I'm seeing this as an attempt to remove Trump down the road from the Debates. Start up these issues now and then try and use them to remove him from Debates if can get enough liberal major media supporting it. They are scared sh*tless of Trump and while they keep saying he has no chance of winning (which I disagree on) they know IF he does that it would spell serious disaster for them and the liberal agenda. I'd even now be wondering if Trump would be looking at some form of EO against biased *news* agencies setting up possibly a system to knock them down for unfair biased reporting.

Miss USA Pageant Still On Despite Donald Trump’s Insulting Remarks

NBC decided not to air the Miss USA pageant on their networks due to Donald Trump’s insulting comments, but the show must go on! The pageant organization has released a statement confirming they will still be hosting this years show — see what they said!

The Miss Universe organization is still planning on conducting their yearly Miss USA competition on July 12 because they “seek to transcend controversy,” they said in a statement released on June 30. The show may still be going forward with their competition, but Donald Trump‘s insensitive remarks about immigration has caused a whole lot of drama — we have all the details.

“The 2015 Miss USA pageant will still take place in Baton Rouge on July 12. We are disheartened by recent events but the show will go on,” the Miss Universe organization said in a statement. “It is unfortunate that recent events beyond our control have only served to negatively impact the women who participate in the pageant, our state directors, our sponsors and our fans. We want our supporters to know we remain committed to them and we will be conducting the pageant, regardless of the current situation.” Click here to read their full statement.

The show will still go on, but it was announced on June 29 that NBC will not be airing it on their network. “Due to the recent derogatory comments by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump,” the network said in a statement. “At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values.” This decision will take a major toll on Donald, as he co-owns the Miss Universe Organization, and the Miss USA pageant was set to air on NBC on July 12.

In case you missed it, this whole ordeal is because Donald made anti-Mexican remarks on June 16, in the middle of a his speech in which he announced his decision to run for president. He said, “When do we meet Mexico at the border? They’re laughing at us, at our stupidity. And now they are beating us economically. They are not our friend, believe me. But they’re killing us economically. The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best.

They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with them. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people. It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming, probably — probably — from the Middle East.”

    Trump: Pro-choice polling numbers declining

By Lauren Carroll on Sunday, June 28th, 2015 at 3:54 p.m.

Donald Trump, who in 1999 said he "was strongly pro-choice," says he's now against abortions and will nominate Supreme Court justices who share his stance.

During an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Trump suggested his shift in position mirrors the feelings of the American public.

"In terms of polling, the pro-choice (support) is going down a little bit," Trump said. "It’s very interesting."
    Is that true?

The most recent polling we could find comes out of Gallup. In May of this year, the polling group found 50 percent of Americans identify as pro-choice, compared to 44 percent of Americans who identify as pro-life.

    That's actually up, not down.

The gap is outside the margin of error, the first time the pro-choice position has a statistically significant edge since 2008. If anything, the pro-choice position is gaining ground, not losing it in recent years. In 2012, 50 percent of people identified as pro-life, Gallup found, compared to 41 percent who identified as pro-choice.

Here's a chart showing the Gallup results since 1996:

Between 1997 and 2008, people identifying as pro-choice hovered around 50 percent, and the pro-life group stayed in the mid 40s, according to Gallup. Between 2009 and 2014, the pro-life group occasionally surpassed the pro-choice group in the polls.

According to the report, some shifts in public opinion on abortion have coincided with political events, such as related legislation or Supreme Court decisions. But because of an increasing percentage of Americans who say their views are primarily liberal, it’s possible the pro-choice group will maintain its edge.

Other research has found that public opinion on abortion has remained relatively stable.

According to Pew, 51 percent of adults say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while with 43 percent say it should be illegal all or most of the time. Those percentages have been near the same level for more than 20 years.

The divide has stayed "remarkably stable" as far back as 50 years, according to researchers out of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., who assembled data from several polls and published an article in The Atlantic about a year ago.

The article points out that in both 1975 and 2013, 54 percent of Americans said abortion should be legal in certain circumstances.

For some additional context, the AEI research found that far fewer Americans consider abortion policy a high priority than you might expect, given the attention paid to the issue. In fact, only 1 percent of Americans polled by Gallup mentioned abortion as the most-important issue facing the country.

The authors also pointed out that Americans are conflicted on abortion -- noting a 2013 study that found many Americans identified as pro-life and pro-choice.

"Pro-life and pro-choice activists don't see the shades of gray that most Americans see on the issue," the authors wrote. "Neither their actions nor court decisions have altered public opinion in any significant way since Roe was decided more than four decades ago."

We reached out to Trump through a spokesperson but did not hear back by our deadline.

    Our ruling

Trump said, "In terms of polling, the pro-choice (support) is going down a little bit."

There was a significant dip in the number of people who identified as pro-choice in 2012, but that number has rebounded during the last three years, according to a Gallup survey. Other research shows the percentage of people who identify as pro-choice or pro-life split has stayed relatively stable for at least the past 20 years.

    We rate Trump’s claim False.
Trump should have run in 2000. I would have voted for him then. But I can't vote for him now.

    What a shame.

When Trump said that NBC keeps liars like Brian and dups someone who tells it like it is was wrong, I immediately agreed with him. It makes no difference who you are, lie to me or support liars, I have a problem with your insincerity.
