NC’s Tillis and Rouzer tour Mexican border in Texas

    FEBRUARY 20, 2017 2:04 PM
    BY COLIN CAMPBELL

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis Chris Seward

Two of North Carolina’s members of Congress are spending their break in Texas checking out the country’s security efforts along the Mexican border.

Sen. Thom Tillis of Mecklenburg County and U.S. Rep. David Rouzer of Johnston County, both Republicans, are part of a Congressional delegation that’s in the Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas on Monday “to learn about border security, trade, and economic development issues unique to the region,” according to a news release from Tillis’ office.

    U.S. Rep. David Rouzer

Tillis, Rouzer and others were scheduled to tour the border on land and by boat, including a stop at a border wall along the Rio Grande river’s levees. President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for expansions of border walls to reduce illegal immigration.

Other stops include the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, the Falfurrias Border Patrol Checkpoint and the McAllen Border Patrol Station.

Tillis has been working on a bipartisan immigration reform plan. He recently told The Wall Street Journal that his plan would aim to tighten border security and toughen enforcement of immigration laws, while providing some kind of protective legal status for the roughly 11 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally.

Back home in North Carolina, Tillis is facing calls to hold town halls to hear from constituents while Congress takes a break. His office has said it prefers other ways of gathering input because “it has become apparent that some individuals, who are not really interested in meaningful dialogue, attend town halls just to create disruptions and media spectacles.”

Instead of town halls, Tillis meets privately with constituents in his offices and hosts telephone-based question-and-answer group sessions and Facebook Live chats, his spokesman said.

On Monday, the N.C. Democratic Party criticized the refusal of Tillis and U.S. Sen. Richard Burr to hold town hall meetings. Party spokesman Mike Gwin was critical of Tillis’ Texas trip:

I'm glad they're in Texas studying the border. Republicans should not do any "town halls". They'll just be wastes of time with Democrats who probably don't even live in the district to begin with and be there just to protest and run their mouths against Trump.

I hope these visits make an impression on the amnesty minded lawmakers.

Me too, GeorgiaPeach. If they listened to their voters they wouldn't support amnesty or legalization or more H1B visas which all steal jobs from Americans.

I can't speak for Rouzer, but this trip will not change Tillis. He's working on another comprehensive immigration (amnesty) plan as we speak. He's just using this trip so he can say he's been on the border and understands the problems. It's all a stunt to push his future amnesty bill. He think this trip will give him more credibility on the border issue.

    BEWARE:

Also, don't say I didn't warn you, this bill may very well be what President Trump is waiting for because it does address the DACA program.

GOP Senator’s ‘Immigration Overhaul’ Would Include Amnesty

A new immigration reform plan by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) would include legalization and amnesty for the over 11 million living in the United States.

Tillis’ “immigration overhaul,” as The Wall Street Journal dubbed it, would serve as a new kind of “Gang of Eight” legislation, promising amnesty to illegal immigrants, which could eventually lead to a pathway to citizenship.

While Tillis’ legislation would increase “border security and toughen enforcement of immigration laws,” it would also grant amnesty, a type of immigration reform measure that Democrats have been demanding since the 1990s.

As the WSJ notes, Tillis’ amnesty bill “gives each party something that it wants,” reiterating that pairing amnesty will tougher border security could be the establishment GOP’s path towards passing comprehensive immigration reform.

Tillis’ legislation would essentially keep former President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) intact, allowing illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. at a young age to stay in the country legally.

“At a later stage,” lawmakers would tackle the issue of visa overstays and addressing foreign worker visas for high and low-skilled labor.

“The left will say it doesn’t go far enough toward open borders and then the other end of the spectrum, which is: ‘We won’t be satisfied until you collect everyone and send them home,’ which is just not practical nor, do I believe, in the best interests of the U.S.,” Tillis told the Journal.

Immigration experts like Mark Krikorian with the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) have taken to social media to call out Tillis’ legislation as just another Sen. John McCain-style “Gang of Eight” amnesty bill.

The “Gang of Eight” legislation was shut down after backlash from immigration groups, voters and pushback from Senators like Trump’s pick for Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, who argued that illegal immigrants should be deported for their law-breaking, rather than being granted legalization to stay.

Tillis is a loser. He's up for re-election in 2020. Seems like an eternity, but he'll be a 1 term Senator.

It wouldn't give the American people what they want and demand...No Amnesty. They really don't care what we want after clearly seeing the outrage over illegal immigration.

    You're so right, GeorgiaPeach.

    What Americans really want is:

    1. Enforcement of US immigration law to the verse and letter
    2. Border Security
    3. Deportation of illegal aliens according to law

It's not complicated, it's very simple.

Let's hope you're right. Unfortunately though, he could be damaging to our cause over the next 3 years. If his comprehensive immigration bill (amnesty) makes it to the senate floor, I'll be curious to see who step up to take Sessions place to defend against it.
