WOODFIN – Mills Manufacturing still has about 40 jobs to fill after an immigration raid in which 57 Hispanic employees were taken into custody on allegations they used fraudulent documents to get hired.

“It’s incredibly difficult to try to place 57 trained and skilled employees in these jobs,â€

I9s WAS THIS COMPANY NOT DOING THEM CORRECTLY? WE KNOW NO ONE WAS VERIFYING!

    Show no MeRcY! ICE.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

For all new hires, Mills is using the E-Verify program, a federal electronic program that can check the work status and documentation of new hires by comparing information from an employee’s I-9 form against Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security databases.

THEY DONT PAY ENOUGH. WHO CAN FEED AND HOUSE A FAMILY ON THAT MONEY? AND I WOULD SAY THEY ARE TRYING NOT TO HIRE AMERICANS FOR THIS. THEY ARE DRAGGING THEIR FEET TO TRY TO PROVE THEY CANT FIND WORKERS. IF YOU NEED TO BE SO HIGHLY TRAINED FOR THIS JOB, THEN WHY DOES IT ONLY PAY 9-14 BUCKS AN HOUR?

vmonkey...The I9 form has nothing to do with Employment Security. It is a Federal form put out by the Dept. of Justice/Immigration Services. It is a form used to determine work eligibility. The employee completes part of the form, and the employer verifies his/her work eligibility according to the list/lists that the government says is acceptable for the employer to use to confirm such work eligibility. So, this information is verified by the employer or whoever does hiring for the company.
I do not live in an area that has an illegal problem. At the time I ran this business I had absolutely no idea that there was this kind of illegal problem either. I did certainly have a vested interest in attempting to make sure that rules and regulations of ALL regulatory authorities were adhered to. One has to have run a business to totally understand the statement about ALL regulatory authorities. Once a manager was hired, then one hoped and prayed that they had taught them well enough and that written store policies were good enough that everything still went smoothly and according to law. (And, our wages were above minimum, but not much higher while were were building up the business.)
I am posting this to clarify more the I9 form. Please realize that most employers do try to follow the rules. I would have had a heart attack if an agency had raided my place for illegals. E-Verify did not exist when I had the business, and I would have moaned and groaned at another regulatory authority to have to deal with and spend time on. E-Verify, from what I have read, sounds simple enough, and NOW I would have no problem using is. There are millions of small business owners in this country so please don't think they are all trying to hire illegals just for cheap labor. Most, I am sure, do try to follow the law.
    Thank you.

mbrown: In my area I went and talked to the state unemployment office and they are doing I-9s for a local company. But they do not E-Verify the I-9.
Yet, they do E-Verify only I-9s of Agricultural Immigrants.

You do understand that no one in a government capacity has been required to ever check on the illegals and employers in their assignment of the I-9s up until currently with ICE doing the checking.

What a mess employers, illegals, and the government have caused.
