In the rough-and-tumble of immigration politics, Martin Lancaster, president of North Carolina's community colleges system, could have tucked his principles into his pocket and retired as planned next spring. Fortunately for the state and for common sense, Lancaster this week issued a thoughtful argument for letting illegal immigrants attend the state's community colleges. In the heated atmosphere of the gubernatorial campaign now taking shape, it was the sound of cool wisdom.
All of the major candidates for governor have denounced a policy that says immigrants in the country illegally have a right to be accepted by the colleges. State Attorney General Roy Cooper has agreed to review the policy's legal standing, but certainly it's in keeping with the high premium North Carolina traditionally has put on providing young people with a leg up in higher education.
Lancaster, echoing Governor Easley's own sensible position, notes that most illegal immigrants who would want to enter a community college were brought here as kids, when they had no choice in the matter and clearly were not intending to break the law. The courts have ruled that they are entitled to a free public school education, and many of those inclined to further their education have done well in school.
Lancaster rightly says that should count. He also contends that they won't burden taxpayers because they pay the hefty $7,465 out-of-state annual tuition. They are likely to work in North Carolina whether or not they are better educated, yet job potential rises with more learning.
Candidates who want to succeed Easley have been joined by shout-fest commentators such as Bill O'Reilly and a flood of North Carolinians who object to the policy. They're not quick to acknowledge that fewer than 350 undocumented immigrants are enrolled in the state's 58 community colleges. Those immigrants who drop out of public school -- about one of every two -- are a bigger worry, since they are more likely to enter a life of crime or depend on expensive social services.
In that regard, a community college education represents a bargain for North Carolina, and a compassionate one at that.

The libidiot, IA hugger News&Observer fishwrap continues it's fair&balanced agenda of advocating for illegal aliens and only printing those letters that supports it's open borders and benefits for illegal aliens agenda:

Lancaster's courage
I would be more optimistic about North Carolina's future if any of the candidates for governor had demonstrated as much good sense as Martin Lancaster did on the question of whether illegal immigrants should be admitted to our community colleges across the board -- and as much political courage.

Crime is the alternative
Regarding the Dec. 1 article "Candidates rip admissions ruling":
It is great for the gubernatorial candidates to be against illegal immigrants, but trying to keep them out of community colleges is crazy. These candidates should be encouraging more of them to get in school.
Illegal immigrants aren't going to leave voluntarily. If the different levels of government continue cutting off services, educational or work opportunities for these illegal immigrants, they really will turn into a crime problem. These immigrants will have no other choice but to slide further into the shadows, making them an even bigger burden on government programs and our society.
Let's face the facts! With an estimated 11.6 million illegal immigrants in our country and more coming across our borders each year, there is no way for the government to deport all of them. Congress must come up with immigration reform that will secure our borders before our nation can focus on what to do with the millions of illegal immigrants currently in our country.
Immigration reform can be achieved only by small incremental steps that will take time to accomplish.

I hold my nose and read the piece of liberal garbage on a daily basis. Recently it seems there is an illegal immigrant supporting article in the N&O almost daily. Well, at least several times a week. I guess they consider illegals as part of their potential customer base. By the way, I believe the McClatchy Company (owners of N&O) is headquarted out of California ."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" ** Edmund Burke**

I thought the problem was having a "too educated" population. That's why nobody wants to do these low-skill jobs, right? That being the case then why are they saying the reverse is true? They are always braying about worker shortages. So which is it.....we need more low-skilled or more educated? After all, the entire economy rests on the shoulders of uneducated illegal aliens!
Biden may hand out green cards to 4,000 illegal migrants per year
