Legislators to Contact DHS over illegal aliens in TN

This seems to be written by someone sympathetic to illegal immigration and critical of any crackdown in Tennessee but it does contain several good links to what is going on in Tennessee:

Rep. Davis Calls Homeland Security to Hamblen County Over Immigrant Concerns

Hamblen County residents are in dire straits, they say, because of the rise in Hispanic immigrants, legal and illegal. This past Saturday Congressman David Davis and State Senator Steve Southerland gathered for a fundraising pancake breakfast held at a local VFW in conjunction with a group called T-FIRE to add their voices and promises to the discussion. Congressman Davis has vowed to call in Homeland Security and other federal agencies to address what some see as a critical state of affairs.

WATE-TV filed this report on Saturday's event, quoting some local residents http://www.wate.com/Global/story.asp?S= ... enu7_2_4_8 :

"You go to the post office and they don't even know what slot to put their mail in," says Charles Cook.

But many illegal immigrants who have come from Mexico say life in Morristown is good and they have made life better.

"I think it is very good for the United States because we make jobs and pay taxes and help this country," an illegal immigrant told 6 News.

Of course, many inside and outside of Hamblen County disagree and want tougher immigration laws.

"I want to see the borders closed and if you are not an American citizen, then you go back home," says Cook.

Rep. Davis says illegal immigrants and their children in Morristown are overcrowding schools, creating long lines at emergency rooms, and some are even participating in gang activity.

Davis is now calling on federal and state immigration and Homeland Security agents to meet with local police in early March to work out a plan.

"Local law enforcement deals with this issue every day," Davis says. "They feel like it is a federal problem, not a local problem. The federal government needs to step up to the plate."
WVLT-TV noted that just over 100 people attended the event and filed this report and video http://www.volunteertv.com/news/headlines/15709067.html :

MORRISTOWN (WATE) -- Millions of people have come into the United States from Mexico illegally, and some of them end up in East Tennessee.

Rep. David Davis (R-1st Dist.) told a gathering of constituents in Morristown Saturday he's in favor of securing the border.

Davis says Tennessee has the fourth fastest growing illegal immigration population in the country, and many of the illegals are living in Morristown.

Many residents now call part of Morristown "Little Mexico."

"It has gradually increased to where the illegals have invaded," says Margret Wilson.

Many who were born and raised in Morristown say things are changing for the worse.

"Local law enforcement deals with this issue every day," Davis says. "They feel like it is a federal problem, not a local problem. The federal government needs to step up to the plate."

Davis says he is also working to bring federal money to Hamblen County specifically to help local law enforcement deal with illegal immigrants.

There are over 60 bills and Tennessee Senators and Representatives need to receive calls to support these bills. Here is the opposition website and their talking points to oppose all of the bills introduced. The group is the TIRRC, an immigrant and refugee rights group that uses the words "anti-immigrant," not anti illegal immigration. Many of these individuals did not choose to come to America and they have no desire to become a part of America. They do want however for Americans to pay for FREE services and benefits and they want these services translated into many languages. They already get much of this currently.

The TIRRC will be holding a rally and contacting Tennessee Senators and Representatives on MARCH 19, 2008. Please let Americans know what this group is doing and contact TN Senators and Representatives to tell them Tennesseans do not want illegal aliens in their cities and neighborhoods.

Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) is a statewide, immigrant and refugee-led collaboration whose mission is to empower immigrants and refugees throughout Tennessee to develop a unified voice, defend their rights, and create an atmosphere in which they are viewed as positive contributors to the state.

Over 60 Anti-immigrant Bills in TN Legislature
Each TN General Assembly meets for two years, and 2008 is the second year of the current assembly. Therefore, most anti-immigrant bills from last year are back on the table, to be joined by any new bills introduced in the coming weeks. We are seeing similar efforts designed to marginalize and criminalize members of the immigrant community, in the misguided hope that they will choose to leave the state. There are, of course, renewed attempts to burden all segments of society—-nonprofit employees, sheriffs, educators, employers—-with the impossible task of verifying legal immigration documents. Republican leaders have publicly stated three "immigration" priorities: 1) Eliminate translations of the driver license exam; 2) Establish new ID barriers for voting; 3) Establish broad verification barriers for all government services. Democratic leaders point to the "TN Immigration Compliance Act" that passed the House last year, and vow to fight for its passage in the Senate.

Read the bills here, but bear in mind that this is from an open borders website to produce talking points to oppose all bills to curb illegal immigration.

    TN Legislature Back in Session!!

Each TN General Assembly meets for two years, and 2008 is the second year of the current assembly. Therefore, most anti-immigrant bills from last year are back on the table, to be joined by any new bills introduced before January 31st. We are seeing numerous efforts to criminalize and further marginalize members of the immigrant community, in the misguided hope that immigrant families will choose to leave the state. There are also renewed attempts to burden all segments of society—nonprofit agencies, state employees, local sheriffs, educators, small business owners—with the complex task of verifying legal immigration documents. Republican leaders have publicly stated several "immigration" priorities: Eliminate translations of the driver license exam; establish new ID barriers for voting; and establish broad verification barriers for all government services. Democratic leaders point to a bill that passed the House last year—the TN Immigration Compliance Act—and vow to advance it in the Senate. The bill would: require all local jailers to profile arrestees based on national origin, and subject all immigrants to special interrogation; require local law enforcement to act as immigration agents; and require all government service agencies to inspect immigration documents. There are also bipartisan measures that would prevent immigrant students from attending community college, prevent immigrant mothers from receiving prenatal care, and prevent some US citizen children from registering their birth certificates in TN, depending on the immigration status of their parents.

The people of Tennessee want a legal immigration system that works, and a federal government willing and able to uphold the rule of law. They don't want a patchwork of state laws that encourage discrimination, undermine worker protections, and drive hardworking immigrant families further into the shadows of their communities. The only real solution for our nation's broken immigration system is for the US Congress to pass meaningful immigration reform and streamline the way that people come to this country.

State and Local Police as Immigration Enforcement Agents—The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) "holds firmly that states do not have 'inherent authority' to enforce federal civil immigration law. We oppose efforts to perpetuate this myth of 'inherent authority' indirectly by shifting federal responsibility of immigration enforcement to state and local officers through the criminalization of any violation of federal immigration law" (2006 NCSL statement on Immigration Reform). (click here for talking points)

(200 SB 2951 by Jackson, HB 3064 by Johnson—Requires all local law enforcement agencies to enforce federal, civil immigration law.

(200 SB 2955 by Ketron, HB 2907 by DuBois—Tennessee Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2008 (same as SB2966 below).

(200 SB 2966 by Ketron, HB 3246 by Hood—Tennessee Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2008. This bill is copied almost verbatim from the controversial Oklahoma law that passed last year. Requires that all government agencies and public schools check immigration documents prior to issuing IDs; requires local jailers to profile arrestees based on national origin and subject some to special interrogation; deems all undocumented immigrants flight risks for bond purposes; requires all public employers and contractors to participate in the federal E-Verify program; creates a civil cause of action for discrimination if any employer fires an employee while hiring an undocumented worker; requires all state and local government employees to inspect immigration documents prior to administering government services; gives the US Attorney General sole discretion is determining whether a government service is necessary for "protection of life or safety;" prevents undocumented mothers from receiving prenatal care; and creates excise tax penalties for employers of undocumented workers. Scheduled for Senate State and Local Government on 3/4.

(200 SB 3036 by Beavers, HB 3037 by Vaughn—Mandates that the TN department of corrections establish a 287(g) program and enforce federal immigration law.

(200 SB 3213 by Watson, HB 2860 by Floyd—Requires all law enforcement to check immigration documents of arrestees, and presumes all undocumented immigrants are flight risks for bail purposes. Scheduled for House Criminal Practice subcommittee on 3/5.

(200 SB 3443 by Southerland—Tennessee Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2008. (same as SB2966 above)

(200 SB 3731 by Bunch, HB 3013 by Campfield—Requires all state and local law enforcement agencies to collect citizenship and immigration data for everyone arrested for a criminal offense, and to enforce federal, civil immigration law.

SB 576 by Burks, HB 1216 by Fincher—"TN Immigration Compliance Act": This bill amounts to a broad transfer of immigration enforcement responsibilities from the federal government to the state of Tennessee, local "peace officers," and private businesses. In an attempt to reduce the cost of the legislation, the House version was amended in 2007 to eliminate Section 3 (requirements for public employers) and Section 4 (mandate for state agreement with ICE); the bill passed the House. The Senate version failed in Finance committee in 2007. (Printable Talking Points)

    * Requires law enforcement to engage in racial profiling. Section 5 states that local jailers must subject certain arrestees to special scrutiny “if the prisoner is believed to be a foreign national.â€
    Matthew 19:26
