A Wilkes County man was arrested on sex abuse charges this week after Surry County officers were called to assist in the investigation of a truancy case involving a student at a Surry County school.

Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson said his office was contacted to help investigate a truancy case that the county school system had referred to the Department of Social Services. A social worker and a detective went to the 15-year-old’s home to conduct a visit.

At the home, they found the girl’s mother. According to the sheriff, the mother did not speak English. She said she did not know where her daughter was and that she had been gone for two weeks. A missing person report was filed.

The teen was allegedly seeing 21-year-old Martin Rodrigues Trejo of 165 Tilley Road, Traphill. Officers then located the girl with Trejo. After an investigation in cooperation with DSS, the office charged Trejo with two counts of felony indecent liberties with a child and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was held under a $10,000 unsecured bond.

Atkinson said that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement picked up Trejo this week and he is being held under a detainer for deportation. Trejo is allegedly an illegal immigrant. The sheriff said Trejo may be brought back to Surry County so authorities can press charges.

How I'd write the opening statement: An Illegal Alien unlawfully residing in Wilkes County...

Yep. And since according to the article the mother doesn't speak English, I'd add
"Mother and daughter's immigration status should be under scrutiny as well..."
