NE-Arrests at Meatpacking Plant After Immigration Sweep
Arrests at Nebraska Meatpacking Plant After Immigration Sweep
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
FREMONT, Neb. — Seventeen people are in federal custody as part of an ongoing investigation of a Fremont meatpacking plant by immigration officials.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Greg Palmore says they were arrested Tuesday at Fremont Beef for immigration violations.
He said Wednesday that immigration agents performed an "enforcement action" — not a raid — to determine whether Fremont Beef is complying with immigration laws.
He says no further information is available.
A message left by The Associated press for a company spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

ICE detains 17 at Fremont Beef
Thursday, Mar 11, 2010 - 10:36:50 am CST
Seventeen people were taken into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody following a Tuesday work site enforcement action at Fremont Beef.
Greg Palmore, spokesman for ICE, said the work site enforcement action was part of an ongoing investigation. No further information on the investigation was released.
The 17 people were taken into custody for alleged administrative immigration violations, Palmore said.
Fremont Beef president Les Leech, in an e-mail to the Fremont Tribune, said the company had been randomly selected by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as one of 1,000 companies to be audited.
“We have been told that during the audit, 18 names were found to be in the Federal Trade Commission database for identity theft,â€Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at http://eepurl.com/cktGTn

Meat Plant Immigration Sweep Leads to Arrests
USAgNet - 03/15/2010
Seventeen people were in federal custody last week as part of an ongoing investigation of a Fremont, NE meatpacking plant by immigration officials, authorities said. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Greg Palmore said the 17 were arrested Tuesday at Fremont Beef Company for immigration violations.
Immigration agents performed an "enforcement action" to determine whether Fremont Beef is complying with immigration laws, he said. No further information is available, he said.
Fremont Beef president Les Leech said in a statement issued Wednesday that his company was among a thousand nationwide that were randomly selected for immigration audits. The names of Fremont Beef workers were entered in the Federal Trade Commission's identity theft database, which showed 18 matches, he said. Those workers were taken in for questioning.
Palmore said he wasn't sure how many were questioned, but 17 were taken into custody.
Leech said he's previously requested access to the FTC database, but has been denied. So, Fremont Beef uses the government's E-Verify system for all new hires.
"We have been doing, and will continue to do, everything legally possible to ensure the work authorization of our work force," Leech said. "Unfortunately, the system that we have access to just isn't perfect.
Illegal immigration has been a hot topic in Fremont, which is among a handful of Nebraska cities that have seen marked demographic changes primarily because of Hispanic work forces at meatpacking plants.
A group of Fremont residents are pushing for a special election on a proposal to ban renting to and hiring illegal immigrants within city limits. But city officials are seeking to block the election because they say the ordinance would conflict with federal law and lead to costly litigation. The Nebraska Supreme Court has agreed to take up the case.

I bet the illegal aliens will be let loose with Obama's policy amnesty work permits.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services found E-Verify had a 50 percent error rate.
Due primarily to identity fraud, the inaccuracy rate for unauthorized workers is approximately 54 percent.
