On Tuesday, state senators will discuss a new proposal designed to curb illegal immigration.

Last week, the legislature's Judiciary Committee combined three immigration bills into one. The new bill would require state and local agencies to verify the legal status of anyone trying to collect public benefits. It would also require public employers and contractors to check their employees' legal status once hired. And it includes a proposal requiring those seeking state tax breaks to prove they verified their employees' legal status.

"The most important aspects that I feel are that any state monies that are being paid out, if it's any kind of benefits, are going to be made sure that it's going to a legal citizen of the state, or of the country," said Senator Russ Karpisek of Wilber.

The bill doesn't address the issue of eliminating in-state tuition for children of illegal immigrants.

Karpisek says it's a completely different issue and can be addressed at another time

    Now that's just common sense!

    Nebraska lawmakers debating immigrant tuition

LINCOLN (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers are considering a proposal to bar some children of illegal immigrants from paying the lower, in-state college tuition rate.

It comes despite assurances from Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber that the proposal isn’t the intent of his bill (LB403).

He said his bill is aimed at curbing illegal immigration through hiring checks on public employees and limits on public benefits.

Sen. Charlie Janssen of Fremont on Tuesday introduced an amendment adding the in-state tuition ban to the bill.

Gov. Dave Heineman has targeted the in-state tuition law since his veto of it in 2006 was overridden.

To get in-state tuition, illegal immigrants must graduate from a Nebraska high school and [/size]must be pursuing, or promise to pursue, legal status.
