NE SOB-Women Denied Prenatal Care Opting for Abortions

Clinics report women denied prenatal care are opting for abortions

..Doctors say at least seven women in Nebraska have opted for abortions because they fear they can't afford the cost of prenatal care since the state stopped paying for it.

OneWorld Health Center in Omaha has had six women who have decided to get abortions after the state dropped their prenatal coverage, said Dr. Kristine McVea, director of the clinic that serves low-income patients.

A Schuyler doctor has also told news media that one of his patients has gotten an abortion because of the change in the state prenatal care program and another one is considering it.

On March 1, 1,550 women lost prenatal benefits; about 840 of them are illegal immigrants.

Some senators are talking about resurrecting the plan to recreate the broad prenatal program after learning about the abortions.

Senators late last week voted to kill the bill (LB1110) that would have required the state to cover all low-income unborn babies, thus providing care to all low-income pregnant women, including those in the country illegally.

In light of the reported abortions, senators are looking at attaching that bill to other pro-life pieces of legislation, said Omaha Sen. Heath Mello.

But Gov. Dave Heineman has not changed his stand. Heineman, who had threatened to veto the prenatal care legislation, says this is an immigration issue and he will not endorse providing tax-funded benefits to illegal immigrants.

Asked about the reports on Friday, Heineman said there hasn't been confirmation of abortions and he wouldn't speculate on what his stand would be if there were confirmed reports.

McVea said the number of women who had been getting prenatal services at the Omaha clinic but decided to get abortions when their Medicaid coverage ended "is really unprecedented."

She said she has cared for about five women in the past decade who have decided to have an abortion and the clinic generally averages about seven women a year who opt for an abortion.

The clinic does not provide abortion services nor referrals, but staff are able to tell when a woman is serious about an abortion and when she is simply considering the idea, she said.

Clinic staff try to get the women who have not made a decision back for another visit in a few days, she said.

But it was clear these six women had made up their minds, McVea said.

And the issue went beyond the expense, she said. For some women, already feeling overwhelmed, it was the last straw. Despite assurances that the tax-funded Medicaid program does cover the delivery, some women feared that wasn't true.

Some women are also postponing monthly prenatal visits because they don't have the $30 charged to the lowest income clients, McVea said.

The number of women opting for abortions has been very upsetting to the clinic staff. "People were in tears. We've never seen anything like this," she said.

People who don't think these women should get tax-funded prenatal care say women are coming to the state simply to get care and give birth here.

But women are not telling OneWorld staff they intend to return to Mexico, said McVea. "Nobody is talking about that.

"That is the sad thing. By denying women Medicaid you are not solving any of the immigration issues. No one is going to Mexico. We are not working out issues of Social Security numbers, or inequities in the job force," she said.

If a woman can't afford her pre-natal care, then she can't afford her hospital bill to give birth, her post-natal care after the birth, let alone the cost of raising a child.

    NE: SOB

Can't afford 30.00 prenatal visits but CAN afford an abortion? Are abortions paid for by American taxpayers?

This is another lie. Mexican illegal's will not give up their anchor baby and most will have healthy babies without prenatal care. Women have babies all the time without prenatal visits. Mexicans are Catholic too and killing a child is unthinkable.

This is just more propaganda. We can not believe anything we hear anymore.

This news story is completely one sided because.

Our citizen and legal immigrant women with pregnancy have often already been aborting their fetuses if the fathers often also citizens and legal immigrants were unemployed. The simultaneous easy availibility of abortion and the over supply in the job market caused by tolerance for illegal immigration has been deadly to Americas own minority members.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

No, illegal women are denied FREE prenatal care at the local clinic. Now they have to make that long trek to the emergency room for free care.

I imagine the benefits they could get from their anchor baby will far exceed the cost of prenatal care.

I do not believe any illegal woman will give up the opportunity for freedbies forever by having an abortion.

That anchor baby is worth so much money via welfare, Medicaid, school lunches, ESL special teachers cause Mom won't learn English. Even free college, you name it, it's free for that anchor baby and of course by extension, that baby's family. All uncles, cousins, grandparents, great grandparents can be brought legally to this country via that anchor baby. It just goes on and on at the taxpayers expense.

Three cheers for the Nebraska govenor for sticking to his guns, we need more like him in the United States.

C'mon, They can afford an abortion but not prenatal care?? I say this
whole article is leftist sob tripe...

If they can't afford $30 for prenatal care then how do they expect to
afford to raise a child?..oh yeah, I'm supposed to pay for it with my tax
dollars. Hint, 50 cents will buy you a condom in any truck stop in the country.

The women in question may not be thinking about going back to their
home countries right now but if we stop paying everything for them
they'll get the message and go back home.
