ALICE, Texas — Authorities in South Texas say nearly 50 immigrants who were smuggled into the country fled from the back of a cargo truck this week as deputies approached.
The deputies with the Jim Wells County Sheriff's Department were pursuing the truck Tuesday evening along a dirt road near Alice. Dashboard video shows the truck stopping abruptly, the rear door opening and a wave of people fleeing.
KIII-TV in Corpus Christi reports (http://bit.ly/12JcPxy ) 31 were apprehended and another 15 fled through fields. The driver of the truck, believed to be the smuggler, got away.
Chief Deputy Rodrigo Ramon says a person entering the country illegally can pay a smuggler up to $4,500 for passage.
Alice is about 45 miles west of Corpus Christi and 120 miles south of San Antonio.
