This month, children of undocumented immigrants in Nebraska can pay in-state tuition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and other state colleges and universities.

The bill which started this new law, LB239, went into affect this month. It was introduced January 2006 and was passed by a legislative override of Gov. Dave Heineman's veto in April. After the final passage by the Nebraska Board of Regents in June, the bill is now in affect.
Ralph Loubeau, a graduate student of leadership, said the bill is long overdue.

Juan Franco, the vice chancellor for student affairs, said though there are no students who fall under the bill have enrolled this semester, there will be some coming in the fall.

"There was a lot of discussion, which was a good thing," Franco said. "Hot button issues like this need to be discussed at length and everyone should have an opportunity to state what their opinion is."

Franco said it was important for the university to comply with the law because education is of utmost importance in the state. Click here for full interview on Franco's views on LB239

"With these youth, like any other youth, the more we can do to educate them, the better," Franco said. "The whole state of Nebraska wants educated citizenry and so the more we can better educate all of our students, the better we can do."
Bryan Perrin, a sophomore pre-nursing major, said he's proud of the state for passing the bill.

Ralph Loubeau, a graduate student of leadership, said he is glad the legislation passed and is now in affect, but said it has taken too long. Click here for Loubeau's opinion

Bryan Perrin's parents are immigrants to the country and the state of Nebraska. Perrin, a sophomore pre-nursing major, said he was proud of the state's passage of the bill.

"It's definitely a good thing," Perrin said.

Isn't this is direct violation of a federal law which says that they cannot give in-state tuition to any group if they are not willing to offer it to all, including kids from all other states? I think was on Lou Dobbs last week....Nebraska was just basically going to thumb their noses at the fed law.
