CHICAGO -- Special agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested a dozen immigrants in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs this week. Eleven of the immigrants have been convicted of crimes, according to the bureau.

Bureau spokeswoman Gail Montenegro said most were arrested in their homes on Wednesday, and all are being held in area jails.

While some of those arrested were in the U.S. illegally, others were legal permanent residents, but because of their crimes, all are eligible for deportation, she said.

Convictions were for a variety of offenses, including sexual abuse, domestic battery and drug-related crimes. Eleven of those arrested are Mexican, the 12th is from Ecuador.
