New bill would impose tax increase on businesses that hire illegals

By Stephen Dinan - The Washington Times - Tuesday, February 10, 2015

A Republican congressman proposed hiking taxes on businesses that hire illegal immigrants, saying Tuesday that it could be one way to shut off the jobs magnet that draws illegal immigrants to the U.S.

Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican, said his bill, the Illegal Deduction Elimination Act, would make a $10-an-hour wage worker cost an employer $16-per-hour without deductions, plus penalty and interest.

“This would dramatically reduce the cheap labor incentive of hiring illegal workers,” Mr. King said.

The IRS has long been in a tricky spot in the illegal immigration debate. Illegal immigrants aren’t supposed to have Social Security numbers, but the tax agency issues them Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, or ITINs, so that those who are working on the books can still pay taxes.

Some Republicans have said that information could be used to track down illegal immigrants, but the government has opposed those efforts, saying it could hurt tax collections and drive workers even farther underground.

Last week the IRS came under fire for confirming that it will pay out refunds to illegal immigrants who gain legal status under President Obama’s new amnesty and who refile their previous tax forms to claim tax credits from the time they were working illegally.

It's a nice attempt at creating a cost disincentive to hire illegal aliens, but I would rather see prosecutions for all persons who file W-2's and payroll taxes on people without social security numbers plus a fine that would bankrupt their business. Employers know when an employee uses a TIN instead of a Social Security number that something is very wrong. There was an article several years ago posted by one of the major newspapers in New York City, it may have been the Daily News, anyway it investigated this issue and found that at that time, illegal aliens were paying approximately $8 billion a year in federal tax revenue, most of it going towards Social Security. I imagine that amount is about the same today. Well, this $8 billion doesn't even cover the cost of educating their kids in our public school system, let alone the cost of welfare services, unemployment insurance costs for the millions of American workers they've displaced, the increased poverty amongst Americans due to the unemployment and deflated wages, the increased crime, burdens on health care facilities, and on and on and on and on.

So we'll be hundreds of billions ahead to arrest illegal employers, lock 'em up, and throw away the key for 10 years and house them with the illegal aliens they hired until the illegal aliens serve their time and are deported.
