Prosecutors with the District Attorney's Office have filed a court affidavit on the recent discovery of almost $1 million in cash at a West Side condominium.
According to the affidavit, the money was found in a condominium at 6201 Escondido owned by Jose Benitez Chavez, also known as Gerardo Morales Avalos.
The affidavit states the money was found at about 11 a.m. Feb. 5 by members of a maintenance crew responding to a water emergency at the condo. The maintenance crew called an El Paso Police officer to help them gain entry into the condo, which appeared to be "not lived in."
The money was found in a box near a locked safe inside a closet wall. They also found a "large amount" of cash in a white garbage bag in the kitchen.
Benitez Chavez has prior arrests by the U.S. Border Patrol for illegal re-entry, the affidavit states.
