New Jersey’s First Labor-Led Naturalization Center Empowers Immigrants, New Voters
AFL-CIO

Angela Delli Santi
The AFL-CIO’s national campaign to build stronger communities by empowering eligible immigrants to become citizens and fully engage in the democratic process has become a reality in New Jersey, with the opening of the state’s first labor-led naturalization and community center.
The We Are One New Jersey Hudson County Center officially opened on Oct. 28 in Jersey City. AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre joined the New Jersey State AFL-CIO for the opening ceremony, along with Sens. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Rep. Albio Sires (D-N.J.), New Jersey State AFL-CIO President Charles Wowkanech, New Jersey State AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Laurel Brennan and a host of state, county and local officials and members of the community.
The center provides U.S. citizenship application assistance, preparatory classes for the citizenship test, voter registration and a deeper understanding of workplace rights. It is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between organized labor and Hudson County government. Nationally, the AFL-CIO is coordinating with the National Partnership for New Americans on the community-building initiative. Said Wowkanech:
We are very excited to have this opportunity to reach out to new Americans by providing hands-on assistance in the community. By helping our newest neighbors become naturalized and gain the right to vote, we uplift our entire community and make it stronger.
Hudson County is home to 653,000 residents, which includes a diverse and vibrant population of Latinos, Filipinos, Egyptians, Haitians, South Asians, Chinese, Portuguese and more. The county is also home to 93,000 Legal Permanent Residents, who are eligible to become U.S. citizens but may lack the financial resources, English-language skills or time to achieve their dream of full citizenship.

Well, you're certainly uplifting the entire community of illegals. But those illegals are undercutting Americans for entry level jobs. The poorest Americana are the hardest hit. But heck, don't think about that. Think about the union dues pouring in.
Yeah, OK, you're conniving with business owners, to keep wages down; but let's be honest, the business of unions is union dues. Right?

AFL-CIO Exec Hopes New Immigration Facility Will Turn Out Democratic Voters
11:03 AM 10/29/2014
Chuck Ross
A vice president with the nation’s largest labor union, the AFL-CIO, is eager for a new immigration center in Jersey City, N.J. to get started on its work of churning out new Democratic voters.
The labor executive, Tefere Gebre, spoke Tuesday at the opening of the We Are One New Jersey, along with Democratic U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Cory Booker, according to The Jersey Journal.
The new facility, which the AFL-CIO says is the state’s “first labor-led naturalization and community center,” will provide 10-week courses for legal immigrants seeking to gain citizenship. The center will also provide free legal counseling and help new citizens register to vote.
While the labor group states that the goal of the center is to empower immigrants to “fully engage in the democratic process,” Gebre said the group has something more specific in mind: He hopes the center will help “turn Republican-leaning electorates a little more Democratic,” The Jersey Journal reported.
The AFL-CIO is generally aligned with the Democratic party, but it is rare to hear officials in the organization openly admit that they hope voters will cast ballots for the party.
Gebre gave the specific example of Orange County, Calif., where he said 38 percent of the vote went to Bill Clinton during his 1996 re-election bid. The county went 45 percent for Obama in 2012.
“That didn’t just happen by itself,” Gebre said. “People worked on it, like you guys are here, starting something today.”
“We need your voice in the daily running of our country,” said Gebre, a native of Ethiopia. “We need your voice to go to the polling place and vote, to be counted on in decisions that we make in this country.”
