New Mexico Border Patrol Agents Apprehend Aggravated Felon

(Tuesday, June 30, 2009)

Columbus, N.M. – Vigilance by U.S. Border Patrol agents in New Mexico resulted in the apprehension of an aggravated felon shortly after he entered the United States illegally, yesterday.

On Tuesday, June 30, at approximately 10 p.m., agents from the Deming New Mexico Border Patrol Station were conducting line watch operations when they observed three individuals running across the U.S./Mexico international boundary.

Agents were able to respond and apprehended the subjects within minutes. All three subjects were transported to the Deming Station for processing and records checks. During processing, one of the individuals, Francisco Romero Chavez, a 33-year-old Mexican citizen, was identified as having a felony criminal record. Some of the criminal charges included Sexual Assault, Sexual Abuse on a Minor, Domestic Assault and DUI. Francisco Romero Chavez was transported to the Luna County Detention Center pending prosecution and removal.

These types of arrests are indicative of the level of work being done by Border Patrol agents in their efforts to increase the quality of life in the communities that they serve. In fiscal year 2008, the United States Border Patrol in El Paso Sector filed more than 8,000 criminal cases to the courts.

CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
