Agriculture experts talk about border threats

LAS CRUCES, N.M. Border states and neighboring countries must cooperate because threats to the food supply don't recognize boundaries.

That's according to experts who are attending the Border Governor's Agriculture Tabletop conference this week in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The conference is dedicated to outlining shared dangers to agriculture along the border. It has attracted about 140 experts from eleven U-S and Mexican border states.

While some talks this week dealt with man-made dangers, most centered on natural pests.

The food safety director for the Mexican state of Sonora says one pest Mexico wants to keep out of the country is a moth that destroys prickly pear cactus.

Joel Floyd of the U-S Department of Agriculture says Mexico has provided funding to the United States to help with researching the moth.
