POMPTON LAKES — Two brothers face charges of kidnapping their sister Monday at knifepoint after she refused their demand to go with them to their apartment to discuss a family matter, police say.
At an arraignment in municipal court Tuesday, Victor Corona, 22, and Delfino Corona, 20, who live in the borough, also were charged with aggravated assault and criminal restraint. Initial bail for each man was set at $750,000 with no 10 percent option. They were transported to the Passaic County Jail.
The men, whom police say are illegal immigrants from Mexico, also face possible deportation. Borough police notified immigration officials about the men, said Lt. Steve Seifried, and federal agents put detainers on them.
A detainer allows immigration officials to proceed with deportation once the men, if convicted, complete a jail sentence or are released upon acquittal. Judge Frank Santora demanded that both men surrender travel documents and that, under a temporary restraining order granted to their sister, Reyna, 24, neither have any contact with her.
Reyna Corona, the alleged victim, declined to talk to a Record reporter who asked for comment.
But police said that on Monday evening Reyna, of Midland Avenue in Pompton Lakes, allegedly received a phone call from Victor, who asked her to come to his apartment on Wanaque Avenue in the borough. Reyna told Victor that she would not go because she did not want to leave her five-month-old son and it was too cold for them to walk, police said.
Police gave the following account of what occurred next:
Victor became very upset and said he would go to her home. Shortly after, he appeared at Reyna’s home and banged on the door, demanding that she come outside. At one point, after she refused to go with him, he pushed open the door and grabbed her sleeve, but she broke free and ran inside. Victor, who was agitated, walked to a van parked in front of the house, in which Delfino was in the passenger’s seat. Victor then removed a knife from the van and returned to his sister’s house.
Reyna reluctantly went with Victor, fearing for her child’s safety. She told police that walking toward the van she could feel Victor hold the knife blade against her back. Victor pushed his sister inside the van and made “slashing movementsâ€
