LAKEWOOD — A man accused of hitting and stabbing another man with a beer bottle is being held without bail on a detainer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement following his arrest.

Police charged Victor Sanchez, 25, of Ocean Avenue with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon, after being flagged down by the victims about 4 a.m. Sunday on Woehr Avenue, said Detective Steven Wexler.

Sanchez is also believed to be in the country illegally and was being held in the Ocean County Jail, Toms River, on a no-bail detainer from immigration officials.

Officer Dan Merrill was flagged down by a man who said he was attacked by Sanchez. Merrill was assisted by Officer Jose Merrero.

Police found Sanchez and Joenisio Aguilar, 22, of Lakewood and questioned them. They also questioned the man who said he was cut by Sanchez, Wexler said.

The victim, an 18-year-old local man, said he was in a house on Congress Street when someone threw a beer bottle through the front window, Wexler said. The victim told police he went outside and saw two men, Sanchez and Aguilar running from the house and laughing. The victim gave chase, police said.

The victim confronted Sanchez, who hit him in the head with a bottle, Wexler said. Sanchez then used the bottle to stab the victim who needed 14 stitches to repair the cuts to the right shoulder. Aguilar was not charged.

Sanchez was also charged with criminal mischief for breaking the window with a bottle, Wexler said.

In addition to the detainer, bail of $12,500 was set on the local criminal charges.
