NJ:Mex. Consulate Issues Passports, Maticula Consular Cards
Mexican Consulate helps undocumented workers in Lakewood
November 8, 2008
LAKEWOOD -- Several hundred Mexican immigrants turned out at Christ United Methodist Church today to get new or renewed passports and consular identification cards, called matricula consular, from consulate officials who came here from New York City.
The Consulate on Wheels program started in February, and has made stops in Asbury Park, Long Branch and Red Bank. This is its second visit to Lakewood. About 160,000 people in the Tri-State area received documents through the program, consular officials said.
Today is the last day consulate staff will be at the church. This week's Consulate on Wheels was to be the last one in the township. But, one more program, originally scheduled in Long Branch, will be rescheduled at the Methodist church here, organizers said.
The documents will allow the immigrants to open bank accounts, get birth certificates for their children and visit relatives in Mexico. Officials issued and renewed passports and consular IDs to nearly 900 people over the past week.
