FL: Jobs, Illegal Immigrants Disappear
Jobs, Florida's illegal immigrants disappear
Study shows almost 200,000 left the state

Florida saw one of the heftiest declines in populations of illegal immigrants in the nation in the last three years, likely because of a drought of jobs and stricter enforcement, says a report released Tuesday.
In 2007, an estimated 1.05 million illegal immigrants lived in Florida. That total dipped to 825,000 in 2010, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, a Washington-based research organization.
Local and county numbers were not available.
Florida was one of only four states that showed decreases from 2007 to 2010; the number of illegal immigrants nationwide has remained stable in the last year, it said.
"Florida has been experiencing a lot of economic distress," said Jeffrey Passel, a senior demographer and a report author. "That's a major factor."
Beefed-up immigration enforcement has also played a role, Passel said, noting the outward migration from Florida.
Still, Florida ranks third among states in the size of its illegal immigrant population.
The illegal immigrant population nationally hit an estimated 12 million in 2007 and dipped to 11.1 million two years later, the first significant drop after two decades of growth, the report says.
The 2010 estimate was 11.2 million. Passel attributed the levelling off largely to the decrease of such illegal immigrants from Mexico.
Mexican-born people make up the largest slices of Lee's foreign-born population, Census figures show.
People who work with and serve immigrants in Southwest Florida say many Central Americans have also left while more Haitians are coming.
Antonio Jimenez, who has lived in Fort Myers five years and is here illegally, said many of his friends have returned to or are planning to return to Guatemala in the last year or so because they couldn't find any landscaping or construction jobs.
"There, they have a house. There, they don't have so many expenses. There, they have their families," said Jimenez, who is in his early 20s and also planning to head back.
He used to work up to seven days; now, he's happy to labor three.
Fort Myers immigration lawyer Ricardo Skerrett was not surprised by the decrease, pointing to fewer illegal immigrants coming in and more leaving in search of opportunities.
"It's the same thing that happened during The Great Depression," he said.
Juan Romero, general manager of Bonita Springs' soccer league Casa Mexico, said the number of players has dropped from about 600 last year to about 450 this year.
Some illegal immigrants have left to work in other states while others have returned to their countries, Romero said. Illegal immigrants make up about 7 percent of Florida's labor force, the report approximates.
He expects more illegal immigrant people to leave because of Gov. Rick Scott's pledge to bring Arizona-style immigration law to Florida.
Scott has said law enforcement must be able to ask for proof people are here legally, part of the Arizona law.
"Everybody's completely scared," Romero said.
But there's been no decline in need at Catholic Charities in Lee, which runs a pantry and helps immigrants navigate social services, said Lourdes Forste, an administrative assistant.
"I would say over the last several years, the need has grown," Forste said.
In some Mexican immigrants' homes, fathers have left to find work, but their families have remained.
She said the Haitian population has grown in the last 18 months and since an earthquake rocked Port-au-Prince in January 2010.
The Rev. Joseph Gabriel of the Full Gospel Assembly in Fort Myers has lived in the U.S. since 1991 and is a citizen. He knows of other Haitians who, especially in the last year, have overstayed visas or entered illegally.
"The situation there was not good before, but now, there is nothing there for them," he said. "And even though the situation here is not good with the economy down, it is still better than what they face every day in Haiti."

I have not seen many immigrants out in the town here; however, I heard they are still working for different companies in this County. They must be hiding some places, and comes out each night, because when I visit Wal'Mart many are there. Some have checks cashed for $1,200.00 at Wal'Mart...Working overtime hours!

Why would any employer allow 25 illegal immigrants work double shifts 7:00 am - 11:00 pm and return to work at 7:00 am the next morning with very little sleep. So this means immigrants begin working at 7:00 am with possibly short breaks and work until 11:00 pm at night, six days weekly. Why not allow some American citizen have 25 jobs, instead of doubling job assignments for undocumented aliens? This type of employment behavior is happening all across this Country is the reason our Country is falling apart so quickly. The things that bug me so much about this type of unlawful actions, many people is aware such unethical work performances is occurring but, are failing to take legal against employers. What is the motive?
