A man who police say is in the country illegally was sentenced to prison today after pleading no contest to hitting two vehicles on the same night while he was drunk.

Shasta County Superior Court Judge James Ruggiero sentenced Magdaleno Huertas-Guiterrez, 35, to four years in prison for driving under the influence causing injury and enhancements for more than one victim.

Huertas-Guiterrez drifted off the roadway and crashed his van into a Yukon SUV near Hilltop and Palisades drives Dec. 5, according to a press release from the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office.

Two adults and three children in the Yukon suffered minor to moderate injuries.

Moments earlier Huertas-Guiterrez hit a vehicle stopped at Hilltop Drive waiting to turn onto Lake Boulevard and drove away, according to the press release.

The van’s bumper was found between the two crash sites, police have said.

A 76-year-old woman in the vehicle that was hit in the first crash also was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.

A records check of Huertas-Guiterrez, who initially gave a false name, revealed he has prior DUI arrests in Illinois, Wyoming and California, police have said.

Redding police contacted the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement seeking an immigration hold to prevent Huertas-Guiterrez from fleeing the country.
