SANTA FE, N.M.—Catholic parishes across New Mexico are expected to participate in a planned anti-abortion rally at the State House.

The planned rally Jan. 18 marks the 39th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision and will come as state lawmakers begin a new legislative session.

Planned events include a mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis in Santa Fe celebrated by all three New Mexico Bishops, and then a rally at the statehouse.

Allen Sanchez, the director of the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops and sponsor of the event, will lead parishioners in lobbying lawmakers.

The rally comes after Catholic Archbishop Michael Sheehan of Santa Fe said the Archdiocese will oppose any effort to repeal a state law allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses.
