Mexican man pleads guilty to drug trafficking

A Mexican man will spend 10 years in federal prison and then be deported if his plea to drug trafficking conspiracy and money laundering is accepted by a federal judge here.

Gustavo Godinez, a native of Mexico who had been living illegally in Los Angeles, was indicted in Pittsburgh in 2013 and pleaded guilty Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Mark Hornak.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said he supplied up to 15 kilos of cocaine to Pittsburgh drug dealers between 2012 and 2013 and used the proceeds to buy cars and open bank accounts in the names of others here and elsewhere to conceal the source of the money and his role.

Judge Hornak said he will sentence Godinez on July 30 after reviewing a pre-sentence report exploring his history, which includes a conviction in California for dealing methamphetamine and several death threats prosecutors said he made in the current case.

In addition to the 10-year term he is likely to receive in July, he could face more time in California.
