Trump administration sends judges to immigration detention centers: sources

The Department of Justice is deploying 50 judges to immigration detention facilities across the United States, according to two sources and a letter seen by Reuters and sent to judges on Thursday.

The department is also considering asking judges to sit from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., split between two rotating shifts, to adjudicate more cases, the sources said. A notice about shift times was not included in the letter.

The Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment.

On Jan. 25 President Donald Trump issued an executive order aimed at speeding up deportations and holding migrants in detention until their cases can be heard. Trump campaigned on a pledge to get tougher on the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants, playing on fears of violent crime while promising to build a wall on the border with Mexico and to stop potential terrorists from entering the country.

The order called for the end of a policy known as "catch and release," by which immigrants were released from detention and given a date to appear in court. Immigration courts have a backlog of over 550,000 cases, according to the Justice Department's data, so many court dates are set years into the future.

Judges are employed by the Justice Department to oversee cases that determine if immigrants are given protections, such as asylum, or ordered deported. A handful of judges work from detention centers but most work from courts around the country.

Two sources familiar with the Justice Department's plan said the department would ask more judges to volunteer for one or two month deployments at detention centers. If the department cannot find enough volunteers, the department would assign judges to detention centers, the sources said.

Judges who volunteer for the first 50 deployments would be sent to detention centers in Adelanto, California; San Diego, Chicago and elsewhere, according to the letter.

Republican Trump's policy on immigrants has been criticized by Democratic lawmakers and advocates for immigrants, who said he was jeopardizing the rights and freedoms of millions while treating Mexico as an enemy, not an ally, and damaging the country's reputation as a welcoming place for immigrants.

First off, we have to - we simply have to stop letting them get away with that figure of 11 million.

Do you remember that was the figure they were using when Pres. George Bush first came into office. There was so much discussion of the number being too low and they raised it to 12 million.

Also, I think this is a great idea. He needs to try to get court going 24 hours a day and actually deportations immediately.

Bear Stearns in 2005 did a study and concluded there were "20 million or more" and they've been flowing in every day since. There's 30 million or more in this country today.

The real number of illegals and there anchor babies is closer too 75 - 100 million.

I wouldnt be surprised if there were 20 million illegals in California alone.

Just look at every major city in the U.S. That has been destroyed by the massive influx of Mexicans and Latin Americans. Look at the kids flooding our classrooms.

I think our government knows the real number and hides it from the American people because they fear another civil revolution.

There's definitely 75 if you count all those given amnesty since 1986 and their offspring. It's sickening what these traitors have done to our country who have not only allowed this to happen but have actually plotted to make it occur.

I hope these Judges FAST TRACK them out of here...direct deportation.

The rest had better start making arrangement to sell out, pack up and go back and get on with their lives on their soil.

I would be honored to volunteer my time to temporarily fill in as judge for immigration hearings.

I would clean up that back-log in no time......

Every case hearing would start with 2 questions and end within 60 seconds:

    1. Did you enter the United States legally?
    2. Is your current immigration status in violation of U.S. Immigration law?

Case conclusion: All request to remain in US DENIED and final Order Of Deportation Entered!

    I will help you Lorrie

We could just put them all in a Stadium...get on the big screen and get it done in 5 minutes.

Have buses waiting to ship them back over the border!!

Cargo planes to send the other ones out.

Report: Trump Relocating Immigration Judges to Speed Deportations

    by JOHN BINDER
    10 Mar 2017
    Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump’s is looking to speed up the deportation of illegal immigrants by relocating some judges to detention centers.

In a letter from the Department of Justice (DOJ) obtained by Reuters, the Trump Administration is moving 50 judges to detention facilities in areas like Adelanto and San Diego, California, as well as Chicago, Illinois.

Additionally, the DOJ will ask immigration judges to hear cases from 6am to 6pm with two rotating shifts to hear more cases.

A source close to the DOJ told Reuters that judges will be able to volunteer for the some 50 deployments to detention centers, but if not enough signed on, judges would be assigned.

Last month, Breitbart Texas reported on a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) memo that requested the Trump administration allow federal immigration courts to use “expedited deportation proceedings” for any illegal immigrants living in the U.S. for two years or less. The process is currently limited to those only living in the U.S. for up to two weeks.
