Number of foreigners deported ramps up

The government deported 2,420 people from the Kingdom in the first nine months of 2015, according to updated figures from the General Department of Immigration released on the National Police website on Wednesday.

According to the report, Cambodia is well on its way to doubling last year’s 1,307 deportations.

The proportion of Vietnamese deportees is also increasing, at 92 per cent so far this year, compared to 81 per cent in 2014.

In addition to Vietnamese nationals, illegal immigrants from countries including China, Nigeria, America, Britain, France and Italy were deported, Uk Hai Sela, investigation chief at the Immigration Department, said.

Despite the growing crackdown, Hai Sela said that he has observed more foreigners using legitimate documents to enter the Kingdom and that he expects deportations to decline, as long as the current trend continues.

“Our police officers do a very good job and most of the foreigners in Cambodia understand and obey the law,” Hai Sela said yesterday.
