DMV computer, ID-making gear recovered after Nevada break-in

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Police have recovered a cache of equipment stolen in a break-in at a state Department of Motor Vehicles office in March, including a computer with personal information from about 8,900 southern Nevada drivers.
The equipment, also including a camera, 1,700 license blanks and laminated plastic covers bearing the embossed state seal, was found Thursday on the roof of an office building under construction in Las Vegas.
State DMV spokesman Kevin Malone said the gear was boxed up and complete. No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made.
Greg Marchio, special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service office in Las Vegas, said personal information did not appear to have been compromised.
Paul Masto, assistant Secret Service special agent, said publicity about the North Las Vegas DMV office break-in may have made it too risky for those who stole the equipment March 7 from using or disposing of it.
Masto, head of a regional identity theft task force, credited investigators using search warrants, polygraph tests, interviews and stakeouts with creating pressure that led to the discovery of the stolen equipment.
North Las Vegas police spokesman Tim Bedwell said it could take up to 10 days to determine if identity information had been copied from the computer or used to manufacture fake identifications.
The equipment was stolen after thieves rammed a truck into the DMV office at the end of a road in a remote industrial area.
Officials said the computer contained names, ages, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, photographs and signatures of southern Nevada residents who obtained driver's licenses between Nov. 25 and March 4 at the Donovan Road office.
State officials have said they changed procedures at all 21 Nevada DMV licensing stations around the state to remove personal information from computers and prevent a recurrence.
