County Clerks Meet Over Illegal Immigrants Licenses

After an emergency meeting of the New York State Association of County Clerks Thursday, the 52-member group passed a resolution in a 30-to-3 vote urging Governor Eliot Spitzer to rescind his executive order allowing illegal immigrants to obtain a drivers license.

Since the Catholic church has gotten involved in a matter of state, they should lose their non-profit status. Any church who gets involved in politics should be stripped of this benefit.

I agree whole heartedly. The Catholic church time and time again over steps it's bounds with the seperation of Church and State and should have it's tax free status removed

The scorn of the church must extend to all denominations. The church in Chicago that hosted Elivra was a Methodist. We've posted recent accounts on the News Stories Thread where churches in the Midwest of multiple denominations are uniting in their efforts to provide sanctuary.

(Carmel, N.Y.) AP -- A number of county clerks across New York state say they will not obey Governor Eliot Spitzer's policy to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses.

The Journal News said 29 clerks voted in favor of a resolution to oppose the governor's recent policy change to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses without having Social Security numbers.

And 13 of those--including Putnam's county clerk--pledged to disobey the governor, even if they are ordered to follow the policy.

The clerks warned that the new policy could fuel terrorism and make it harder to determine who is in the state legally.

Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant says "we're at war with terrorists" and giving drivers licenses to illegals gives them a badge of legitamacy.

Spitzer's policy has increasingly come under fire from Republicans and county clerks after he announced it last month. Assembly Republicans have threatened to sue, while Senate Republicans plan to pass legislation to thwart the plan.

State DMV Commissioner David Swarts said county clerks are agents for the commissioner of motor vehicles and must comply with the state rules.

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola says give illegal immigrants a license but have it say "illegal" on the front.

Spitzer has said the policy will improve security in New York by reducing the number of unlicensed drivers and improve homeland security by better documenting illegal immigrants.

Spitzer cites five organizations that support the measure. Let's look:

1) The Catholic Council (better start making the print on those collection baskets en Espanol.)
2) AFL-CIO (gotta love all that cheap, cheap labor and just think of all the dues.)

can't figure this one out - looks like an anti-war group - don't know why they'd want to stick their noses into this mess if they truly want peace - illegals' legally driving would only cause less peace

To be 'fair and balanced' the governor should have listed the organizations opposed to the measure. His effort is self-serving, not informative.
