Five members of three Mexican gangs were arrested this week in Yonkers and New Rochelle in a search for criminal illegal immigrants, authorities said yesterday.

Yonkers Police Lt. Diane Hessler said the suspects are members of Cholos 18, Vatos Locos and Aztek Pride.

"They are all known to be involved in criminal activity," Hessler said, adding that they were arrested on federal charges of being in the United States illegally.

They were taken into custody without any violence, police said

The raids started at 6 a.m. Thursday by teams made up of the Yonkers Narcotics and Gang Unit and the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The teams raided six locations in Yonkers.

It was part of the federal government's "ICE Surge 2008" to gather people with criminal records who are in the country illegally and deport them.

Arrested from Cholos 18 were Albarto Gonzalez, 18, of 114 Beech St. and Raymondo Lopez, 22, of 25 Palisade Ave., police said.

Edgar Juarez, 18, of 26 Purser Place and Carlos Mejia, 19, of 77 Waring Place, two Vatos Locos members, were arrested, police said.

Victor Onofre, 24, of 33 Oak St., an Aztek Pride member, was also arrested, police said.

New Rochelle police, ICE and Westchester County Probation officers also arrested two people - Juan Valdovino, 18, and Sereriano Valdovino, 19, both of 55 May St., New Rochelle. It is not know if they are involved with gangs or if they are related.

All were taken into federal custody.

Good to see that even here in "sanctuary country" there's some progress.

Just because you're used to something doesn't make it right.
