Police say two crossed U.S. border illegally, one by land and one by canoe

Police stopping a vehicle for a loud muffler near the Canadian border discovered a passenger they say had snuck into the United States by canoe.

Trooper John J. Poggi III stopped Alain Degenais, 48, of Gatineau, Quebec. Francois A. Michaud, 43, also of Gatineau, was a passenger in the vehicle.

Poggi questioned the men and learned both had entered the country illegally, Degenais by the Ogdensburg port of entry, Michaud by canoe under the cover of darkness. A wet suit was found in the vehicle, police said.

The men were turned over to federal immigration agents.
